 February 2011
Greetings!

Part of the benefit of overseeing an amazing program such as the SBDC is the opportunity to honor the great work of all our center directors. The Colorado SBDC had a banner year in 2010 surpassing all 2009 figures and all of our 2010 goals.

The network put up some impressive numbers in 2010: Working with small businesses around the state, we helped create over 1,700 jobs, retain 2,500 jobs, assist over 500 business starts, support almost $85 million in capital formation, and counsel over 5,400 clients. For every dollar spent by the SBDC network we creating over $40 in capital formation, a great ROI.

One standout director I would like to Highlight is Joe Keck, Southwest Colorado SBDC director. He has been making headlines lately by winning awards and honoring others. The Durango Chamber of Commerce selected Joe to receive the Outstanding Contribution to the Community award. He also had the honor of handing out the Small Business of the Year award at the 72nd Annual Cortez Chamber of Commerce banquet and awards ceremony.

Congratulations and thank you to Joe Keck and every other SBDC director for all your hard work and effort. Your contributions make our network one the best in country.

Sincerely,

Kelly Manning

Success Story: Cévan International

Cevan Label MakingCévan International is a small nutritional supplement manufacturing firm in Longmont, CO. The name Cévan is Sanskrit and means "to help willingly." The name aptly describes the philosophy of the business, and how Jim Goudelock, owner, describes his experience working with the Boulder SBDC.

Founded in 1992, the company manufactures nutritional products including vitamins, minerals, botanical extracts and specialty nutraceutical formulations. Its highly successful market niche is smaller, under-served countries that most supplement sellers overlook. These include Ecuador, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Kuwait, and Russia. Outside of the United States, doctors regularly prescribe nutritional supplements as medical treatments, just as U.S. doctors prescribe pharmaceuticals. Cévan is accomplished at clearing the many hurdles related to registration of the projects as medicaments with local health authorities.

Jim Goudelock was the manager of the international division of a large publicly traded company in 1999 when he had an opportunity to buy his division from its parent company. His strengths were his knowledge of target markets, his relationship with existing customers, and his thorough knowledge of the products and their ingredients.

As all other new business owners know, you need help learning how to develop and manage your own firm. Jim turned to the Boulder SBDC for help in 2006, and has benefited enormously. Jim calls the SBDC "a treasure" and says that, "it really feels good to know you have the SBDC resources and people to turn to whenever a need arises." Jim credits the Director of the Boulder SBDC with part of his success. "The Boulder Directors depth of experience, forward thinking and insight resulted in a huge leap for my business," he said.

The partnership between Cévan and the Boulder SBDC is a notable example of how government and private business can succeed when they both aspire to help willingly.

Colorado Recovery Watch

CO Fiscal PolicyThe Colorado SBDC would like to pass along a great resource on Colorado fiscal policy and economic recovery data. The Colorado Fiscal Policy Institute runs a Colorado Recovery Watch publication that includes monthly snapshot of economic data, with a special focus on jobs and public-assistance programs. Below a short excerpt from this months update and the entire publication can be found Here.

Colorado's economy continues to show signs of slow recovery. In 2010, personal income grew with increasing strength, consumer sentiment improved and corporate profits rose to new heights. Yet, as laid-off workers begin to look for jobs again, Colorado's unemployment rate inches upward. And while the recovery lurches ahead, enrollment growth in state food- and health-assistance programs continues unabated. Below is a graph showing the rising Unemployment.

SBDC Promotes Creative Entrepreneurs

Colorado Creative Industries LogoThe Colorado SBDC is strengthening its partnership with the Colorado Creative Industries by hosting Leading Edge Programs, SBDC's signature 10-12 week entrepreneurial business plan training course, specifically designed for creative entrepreneurs. A pilot program is already underway and Beth Marcue, an artisan out of Gunnison, has begun blogging about the Leading Edge Course at Borick Business Building at Western State College. Below is quote from her first entry but you can find the full story on her blog Here.

"I am taking part in this class to be better organized and more knowledgeable about my strengths and weaknesses. To become a better business person and help me focus.  My business is all about creativity & creative services. A portion of my business focuses on creating consistently original and fresh graphic design work.  As an artist I think about design in almost everything I do. I believe in good design, the order it creates and the message that it conveys and the joy that it brings."

Business Tip: Tax Tips for New Businesses from the IRS

Are you opening a new business? The IRS has many resources available for individuals that are opening a new business. Here are six tax tips the IRS wants new business owners to know.

  1. First, you must decide what type of business entity you are going to establish. The type of business entity will determine which tax form you have to file. The most common types of business are the sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation and S corporation.
  2. The type of business you operate determines what taxes you must pay and how you pay them. The four general types of business taxes are income tax, self-employment tax, employment tax and excise tax.
  3. An Employer Identification Number is used to identify a business entity. Generally, businesses need an EIN. Visit IRS.gov for more information about whether you will need an EIN. You can also apply for an EIN online at IRS.gov.
  4. Good records will help you ensure successful operation of your new business. You may choose any record keeping system suited to your business that clearly shows your income and expenses. Except in a few cases, the law does not require any special kind of records. However, the business you are in affects the type of records you need to keep for federal tax purposes.
  5. Every business taxpayer must figure taxable income on an annual accounting period called a tax year. The calendar year and the fiscal year are the most common tax years used.
  6. Each taxpayer must also use a consistent accounting method, which is a set of rules for determining when to report income and expenses. The most commonly used accounting methods are the cash method and an accrual method. Under the cash method, you generally report income in the tax year you receive it and deduct expenses in the tax year you pay them. Under an accrual method, you generally report income in the tax year you earn it and deduct expenses in the tax year you incur them.
