Minerals and what they do:
Titanium Dioxide gives the skin a healthy glow because of its brightness and high refractive index which is surpassed only by diamonds.  It is the most widely used white pigment in the world and provides total sun protection..  (We also use this in all our AM formulas as a natural sunscreen.).
Zinc Dioxide is an opaque mineral and also offers excellent sun protection.  Because it is nearly water insoluble, it keeps makeup in place all day and gives a healthy glow.  It has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial qualities and is used in antiseptic ointments as well as in the new mineral makeup.
Iron Oxide has a wide range of colors (red, yellow, orange, brown, black, etc) and is a favorite for mineral makeup.  It does not contribute to skin sensitivity as artificial colors do.
Mica also is very colorful ranging from clear to yellow as well as green, black, and brown.  In nature it is found in thin, crystallized sheets and can appear either dull or shiny.  It is used primarily to control the amount of luminosity in mineral makeup formulations.
Bismuth on the other hand is added to provide shimmer to mineral makeup products.  It is also known as "synthetic pearl" and provides brightness and whiteness.  Bismuth also creates a smooth texture to formulations.
Boron is a matt white powder composed of flat crystals that encourage adhesion of makeup to skin. 
Silica is of course made from sand.  It is used in makeup to control shine because it can hold seven times its molecular weight in moisture.
Dimethicone is also made from sand or silica and mostly comprised of quartz.  It produces a silky glide to the texture of makeup and forms a film on the surface of skin which prevents moisture loss.
