My Anti-Aging Secret:    Anti-Inflammation = Anti-Aging

"Cutaneous inflammation has now been linked to many diseases, including cancer, as well as visible skin aging," states an article in SkinInc.  The article reviews the compelling scientific information that concludes chronic inflammation is a major culprit in visible skin aging.

In his book, The Wrinkle Cure, Dr. Perricone states that "visible skin aging can be reduced and prevented by the daily use of antioxidants and/or anti-inflammatory cosmeceuticals coupled with a diet rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant foods."

What is inflammation?  It is the reaction of living tissue to injury or infection, characterized by heat, redness, swelling, and pain.  You probably know where I'm going with this.  Aloe Vera has long been known for inhibiting prostanoid production which produces fever and pain.  That's why grandma told you to keep an aloe plant on your window sill in your kitchen.  When you sustain a burn and rub on the inner gel from the leaf, the pain instantly vanishes like a miracle.  The skin instantly begins collagen synthesis and heals.  This is enough to make you a believer.

But wait there's more!  Dr. Ian Tizard of Texas A&M recently gave a presentation on new studies that reveal aloe vera also has a second anti-inflammatory mechanism.  New research reveals it also blocks neutrophil emigration which produces harmful enzymes (MMP's) and oxygen metabolites which cause tissue damage.  SkinInc states that "visible skin aging parameters, such as fine lines, wrinkles, fragility and laxity are due to solar elastosis, collagen destruction, and tissue atrophy induced by damaging MMP (matrix metalloproteinases) activity."
