Q10 CUTIE
 Most derms (dermatologists) and scientists agree that photo-aging caused by a cumulative exposure to UV light is the number one reason for negative changes in the color, texture, and overall health of the skin. I personally believe cigarette smoking causes more damage than the sun, but that's another topic for the future. So we all know that too much sunlight produces free radicals that damage skin proteins and cellular DNA, but did you know that it also damages the skin's surface lipids which provide the body's outermost protection against oxidative damage? These lipids keep the skin moist and supple preventing wrinkling.
One of the reasons for this free radical damage from the sun is because as we age Coenzyme Q10 cellular levels decline. An eight year Italian study found a direct link between Q10 levels and the progression of melanoma, the deadliest of skin cancers. Concentrations of Q10 were lower in people who had melanoma, when compared to healthy subjects; and alarmingly, even lower in patients whose cancer had mastasized to other tissues.
The GOOD NEWS is that studies have proven that both topical and oral use of CoQ10 restores deficient CoQ10 levels in sebum (surface lipids) and the stratum corneum (skin cells). Another benefit of CoQ10 is that it counteracts the decline in mitochondrial energy production inside the cells. This antioxidant enzyme thus counteracts several of the main contributors to skin aging.
