Montez Bailey Memorial Scholarship

On May 29, 2009, hearts in Salem were broken over the senseless death of Montez Bailey, a young man who was shot and fatally wounded while sitting on a park bench with two friends. His friends, 21-year old Skylar Bailey and 20-year old Cameron Carolino, were also shot, but they survived. Eduardo Angulo, longtime advocate for kids in the Salem area said, "This is one of the most senseless crimes that we have ever had to witness in our lifetime."

In memory of Montez's life and legacy, a Memorial Scholarship has been established in his name. For this scholarship to be activated and distributed to students, it must contain more than $5000. Unfortunately, the Montez Bailey Memorial Scholarship has a current balance of less than $1000.

In an attempt to raise money for the Montez Bailey Memorial Scholarship, One Body (Chemeketa's Intercultural Community Service Club) and the Office of Student Retention and College Life will be hosting a semi-formal fundraising dinner. Along with the entrée, side, and dessert, there will be music, speeches, poetry readings, and much more from various students and members of the community. By attending this dinner and supporting this scholarship, you will help keep Montez's dream alive by allowing other students to pursue their dreams towards success.

What:  Montez Bailey Memorial Scholarship Dinner

When:  May 25th, 2011, 5:30-8:00 PM

Where:  Chemeketa Community College

Renewable Energy Project? NOW is the time to apply for REAP grants

USDA Rural Development's (RD) Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) offers grants on a competitive basis to rural small businesses and farmers for renewable energy systems.  A change to REAP rules in 2011 added renewable fuel dispensers to the list of systems eligible for REAP assistance.

RD-Oregon's REAP web site is now updated with resources to reflect all of the recent changes in the REAP program, and the site includes handy templates for applicants to use:  http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/or/reapre.htm

Rural gas station owners who are interested in adding either an E-85 or biodiesel dispenser to their operation are encouraged to contact RD-Oregon about this REAP grant opportunity.  You can read more about the Flex Fuel Initiative here:  http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/or/biz/FlexPumps.pdf

The deadline for applications for 2011 REAP awards is JUNE 15.

Make your Web Presence Known

Having an online presence for your business today is a must.  It is great for marketing, but more importantly, it legitimizes your business in the public's eye.  The Wall Street journal recently released an article "A Web Presence Without a Website," a good read, particularly if you don't have the time or means to create a website.  The article looks at a business owner who capitalized on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook to build their online presence. LinkedIn posted a great article on their blog about how business owners can use LinkedIn for their business, check it out and make your web presence known!
