How to save money on DIY projects

You've crunched the numbers, recruited knowledgeable friends, and know that you're saving money by using your own muscle-power to revamp your living space. But wouldn't it be nice to save even more money and use those extra dollars to, say, purchase artwork for your new den? Here's how to pinch a few dollars when remodeling or sprucing up a room.

Be a know-it-all. It goes without saying that the more you know how to do something the less time it will take you. But being a know-if-all is also a great way to save money. Sign-up for free seminars at your local build-all retailer (such as Home Depot), buy or borrow how-to books and manuals, or rent an instructional DVD relating to your project.

Best of August Events:

Cirque Du Soleil

Cirque Du Soleil is opening a new show in Toronto on August 10!

According to the site, TOTEM traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. The characters evolve on a stage evoking a giant turtle, the symbol of origin for many ancient civilizations.

The shows are always incredible. This one is playing until October 10th.

Best ice cream in TO

The best ice cream parlours in Toronto are at the height of their busy season now, which is the best time to get flavours fresh and frost-free, if you don't mind line-ups. There's been an explosion of new parlours opening all across the city, so this list will probably be out of date by the time the summer is over and proprietors look over the balance sheet to see if they'll make it through the winter.

Let's not think about winter, though, in this brief efflorescence of summer's heat and light. It's also not worth thinking about ice cream as health food.
