Coast MP calls for fair share of school-based police officers

GAVEN MP Alex Douglas has called for a fair share of school-based police officers on the Gold Coast after recent violence-related incidents at schools in his electorate.

Dr Douglas asked the Police Minister in Parliament to guarantee a school-based police officer would be placed at either Pacific Pines or Nerang State High School as a matter of urgency.

"Currently out of 35 officers across the state we only have two school-based police officers on the Gold Coast, located at Robina and Beenleigh," said Dr Douglas.

"The Gold Coast has almost a third of the high schools in the state but the State government has only allocated a 6 per cent share of school-based police officers.

"Just as the Gold Coast deserves a fair share of police officers across the state we also deserve our share of school-based police officers...more

Questioning Minister over GC Hospital cutbacks

SECRET talks amongst Queensland Health senior officials and bureaucrats have revealed $35 million of front line services will be cut from the Gold Coast Health district over the next four months.

Gaven MP Dr Alex Douglas MP asked the Health Minister in Parliament to detail the proposed cutbacks at the Gold Coast Hospital at Southport and the total savings the government is planning to recover over the December 2011 to March 2012 period.

"The Health Minister is claiming no knowledge of the closure and proposed service cutbacks but the Director-General of Health is acting on the Minister's orders," said Dr Douglas.

"The cutbacks will mean a reduced capacity at our major hospitals including the Gold Coast Hospital at Southport and will likely result in longer waiting times across the board...more

Carrara residents heard over rail noise concerns

CARRARA residents living adjacent to the Gold Coast to Brisbane railway will be eligible for noise barriers if Queensland Rail records risky noise levels at their homes, said Gaven MP Alex Douglas.

Dr Douglas said he contacted the Transport Minister after receiving complaints from residents in Paddington Drive of Carrara, who claim their area remains one of the few urbanised areas near a railway line which does not have noise barriers.

"Residents have told me life has become unbearable due to the noise from trains, which can reach speeds of up to 140kph," said Dr Douglas.

"We have had a small victory for residents now that Queensland Rail has confirmed noise levels will be assessed to ascertain if there has been a deviation from the Code of Practice...more

Ministers pass buck on consultation on Carrara Games development

DESPITE numerous requests for community consultation over the proposed Carrara Commonwealth Games precinct, the State government continues to ignore residents' concerns, said Gaven MP Alex Douglas.

Dr Douglas asked the State Development Minister in Parliament whether there would be consultation with local residents over the development which would impact upon their daily lives considerably.

"I requested consultation with the Sports Minister and he mocked residents by completely ignoring the question, then I requested consultation with the Employment Minister and he passed the buck," said Dr Douglas.

"For residents' sake Minister Fraser must answer the question and give locals the direction they deserve from their government...more

'WRAPPED FROM THE HEART' 2011 CHRISTMAS APPEAL

FOLLOWING a successful drive last year, Gaven MP Alex Douglas has launched the 2011 'Wrapped from the Heart' Christmas appeal for local needy families.

Dr Douglas has linked with the Nerang Neighbourhood Centre Foodbank which continues to experience a high demand in weekly food hampers as

residents face difficult times.

"I named it Wrapped from the Heart because there are many generous people in my electorate who do so much from their heart for the homeless and needy in the community.   We are always heartened by their support and know they will get behind the appeal again this year," said Dr Douglas.

"It also reminds me of that well-known saying 'He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.'  Let's get behind this appeal and bring joy to those less well-off in the community."

Nerang Neighbourhood Centre Foodbank Coordinator Dianne Munro said she was overwhelmed by the support received from the Wrapped from the Heart appeal last year.

"We had such a wonderful response to our calls for support and we really do appreciate those who will give again to the appeal in 2011."

Dr Douglas has urged residents to bring Christmas gifts of non-perishable food, toiletries such as shampoo and soap, toys, games and other gifts for families to his office.   These gifts will be distributed with food hampers from the Foodbank.

He said:   "With the high unemployment and everyday expenses going up, people  are really struggling to celebrate Christmas, particularly those with young families.

"I'm challenging residents in the community, work-places and community groups to get behind this appeal and show what a heart they have for those less fortunate."

Gifts should be left at Dr Douglas's office at 4/12 Ferry Street, Nerang, by Friday, December 16 for distribution to the community.

HOON LAWS NO GOOD WITHOUT EVIDENCE

GAVEN MP Alex Douglas warned today that a lack of police resources meant the State government's new hooning laws would be practically insufficient to stop hoons in our suburban areas.

Dr Douglas said hooning hot spots in his electorate such as in Nerang and Highland Park, fell victim to not enough police on the beat.

"I fully support the legislative step to make car impounding laws tougher but it does not automatically follow that we will see more cars impounded and less hoons: you need to catch them first," he said.

"The Police Minister issued caution for residents trying to catch offenders by recording video footage due to the risk to their own safety, but in reality this is the only way residents get a result...more
