Wisdom Words
"When you doubt your power, you give power to your doubt."
__Honore de Balzac
Some helps for building self-confidence when you are feeling defeated.
1. Ground yourself. Focus on the positive.
2. Balance the negative. Praise yourself!
3. Take a break. Shift your focus - doodle, scribble, paint with your hands, move to some music.
4. Nurture yourself. Take time to play. Write down three things you are thankful for.
5. Connect with others. Draw on the encouragement of people who may be experiencing the same things you are.
"He who deliberates fully before taking a step will spend his entire life on one leg."
__Chinese Proverb
Embracing Vulnerability
1. Be aware - be present
2. Be honest
3. Be okay with it
4. Jump!
Don't wait. Take off your armor and embrace your vulnerability.
Ten Reasons to be Okay with Being Disliked
1. It allows you to be true to yourself.
2. It gives you the power to say no.
3. You're more comfortable exploring your feelings.
4. Your candor can help other people.
5. You can freely express your thoughts.
6. It prepares you for greater success.
7. It teaches you to offer kindness and compassion without expectations.
8. You can inspire other people.
9. You can use your time wisely.
10. You can choose to smile anyway.

Using Click-On Links
Sometimes when you use a click-on link in the newsletter, it may seem that it is not coming up. I have found that there is sometimes a delay. This can be frustrating, but try being patient and wait a bit. It usually does come up.

Strategies for a Successful Art Career
Lauren Rabb, sole curator of the University of Arizona Museum of Art beginning in 2009, presents "Strategies For A Successful Art Career." She curates, on average, fourteen exhibitions a year.
The museum showcases over 6,000 objects that span seven centuries for which she is responsible. Some landmark exhibits include Metropolis, The Aesthetic Code: Unraveling the Secrets of Art and The Border Project: Soundscapes, Landscapes and Lifescapes. The Aesthetic Code was chosen by TUSD as a permanent part of the Opening Minds through the Arts curriculum. She has also opened the UAMA Collaborative Research Center in the Pfeiffer Gallery which has allowed students, faculty and local scholars to curate small exhibitions in the museum.
Previously Lauren was both owner and director of The Gallery at 6th and 6th in Tucson. This private gallery specialized in American Modernism from the 1940's forward. She also produced catalogues for all major exhibitions, which included essays written by experts in the field.
She includes in her background acting as Director of Historical Paintings at Hollis Taggart Galleries in Washington DC and other directorships of art in Washington. She brings a wealth of teaching experience in novel writing and art related topics and has done several conference presentations. As a juror, she includes the SISTA exhibit at the University of Arizona, The Jewish Community Centers Annual Art Exhibit and the Santa Rita Art League's annual exhibit along with many other shows in both Arizona and New Mexico.
The wealth of knowledge that Lauren will bring to our group about the world of art is overwhelming. We hope that you will plan to attend this informal discussion.

Opportunity Knocks
There is an opening for one or two people to become helpers for the program chairperson, Nancy Norton. This job would include helping to set up the room for whatever presentation is planned for the meeting. There is a lot to do in getting ready for a monthly meeting and extra hands and others with the knowledge of what needs to be done is essential to a smooth operation. Please let Marti or Nancy know if you would be willing to help in this way.

The Circle of Book Clubs and The Humane Society will be hosting a book and art event on December 2, 2012 to benefit both the Pima Library Foundation and the Humane Society. Dr. Kristin Nelson, a Scottsdale veterinarian will be presenting her book - Coated With Fur. We will also have a silent auction of animal inspired art. (art may be two or three dimensional, in any medium or combination of mediums, and animal inspired is extended to birds and fish - so any work with feathers, fins and gills will be welcomed. We hope that members of CASA will generously support this event by donating originals or prints of original artwork for the auction. The Circle's book events are typically held at beautiful private homes and wine and light refreshments are served.
Artists who donate to the auction will be given a complimentary ticket.
I've asked Marti White to inform CASA members of our event. Please direct your questions to Rona Rosenberg at the Kirk-Bear Canyon Library,
By e-mail - rona.rosenberg@pima.gov or 594-5275.
Thank you.

UNCREATIVE DAYS
Uncreative days are real life. Every artist knows them. Uncreative days are part of the yin/yang of artistic yearning.
What do you do? You don't do anything. Zilch. Nada. Zip. Wait it out. Accept the fallow period as graciously as you can and get ready for a quantum leap in creativity.
This does not mean you can quit. You still have to go through the motions, keep showing up at the drawing board. Continue to prepare the canvas. Pretend you're a creative temp. Your only assignment is to replenish the well. Resurrect any old creative projects that might have fallen into the sinkhole of second thoughts or the back of the closet. Give them another glance.
If you're creatively barren, give yourself a break. The hardest thing we'll ever do as artists is learn to call an occasional halt. Today, if you're feeling uncreative, don't despair. Start getting excited and save your strength. You're being prepared for a quantum leap in creativity! In the natural world droughts depart as suddenly and as mysteriously as they arrive. This too, is life.

Fall Three-Day Workshop
with
David Adix
October 24-26, 2012
David Adix, a Tucson artist, taught a mini-workshop for CASA about a year and a half ago. The reviews were so enthusiastic we invited him back to present a three-day workshop for us, "Exploring Collage," on Wednesday, October 24, Thursday, October 25 and Friday, October 26, 2012. The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Goddard Hall, 4831 East 22nd Street, Tucson. The class is suitable for beginners to advanced collage artists. Applications for the workshop will be accepted by mail based on the earliest postmarks. Please refer to the registration form which is attached below.
David is a classic collage artist in the manner of early 20th century artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris. He uses found papers-often the most humble bits of paper such as hot - cup wraps, old maps and other papers, the older and the more worn out, the better - and turns them into distinctive and dynamic works of art. His style of collage is also known as "pure" collage in that he uses found or purchased papers and usually does not paint his own papers or paint over his collages. His signature work is long, narrow human figures made of found materials in assemblage.
David is represented by galleries in Tucson, Scottsdale, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Some of his out-of-state galleries are in California, Michigan, Vermont and Florida.
Workshop is Full!

Letter from the President
It was so good to be with all of you again after the summer break. What a great program with John Salgado. He certainly gave us a lot of food for creative thinking in our assemblage work. As you will discover in another article later in this newsletter, this is just the first of several very interesting programs for this year. Thank you so much to Nancy Norton for the time and energy that she put into setting all this up. She worked hand in hand with Carmen Williams who is in charge of the Mini-Workshops. Several of our programs will lead into these shorter workshops.
These last few weeks I have felt bombarded by politics - much of which has been negative and disturbing. It is difficult to keep your focus centered during times like these and I have been thankful for those few moments in each week when I have been able to retreat to my studio and settle into my art. We are so fortunate, as artists, to have this outlet for our busy minds - a place to quiet ourselves and move away from the troubles of the world around us and find the peace of color, composition, design, line, mark making and creative thought. Hopefully these times are productive in many ways - keeping us healthy and producing wonderful new work that we can bring to the opportunities to show our work that CASA is offering this year.
So it is with enthusiasm that I welcome this new year of fellowship with you, my art family, as we work together and create together and push ourselves into new ways of doing our art.
Marti White, President

"The Artistry of Assemblage"
CASA at Mesch, Clark and Rothschild Law Firm
Coming in January
CASA will be doing a three-dimensional show at Mesch, Clark and Rothschild to be hung in January. The jury date is November 2, at our regular CASA meeting at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church. You will be able to submit two pieces - assemblage or other three-dimensional work. All work must hang on the wall. This show will hang for several months. Mesch, Clark and Rothschild is located at 259 N. Meyer Ave. in downtown Tucson. The space can accomodate some large pieces of work, so think big rather than small. We are hoping many of you will try something new if you have never worked in three-dimensions before. This should be a fun show!
