"Unless you seek art as a man whose hair is on fire seeks a pond, don't pursue it."
                   __Joseph Campbell

"As long as creative people feel in harmony with their work and are progressing they are happy and fulfilled.  When the relationship breaks down, their interior life also breaks down."

                              __Emmet Fox

"I find that when I have an appoint-ment, even an afternoon one, it changes the whole quality of time.  I feel overcharged.  There is no space for what wells up from the sub-concious; those dreams and images live in deep still water and simply submerge when the day gets scattered."

Laying the Basics and Beyond

 Fixed Lagoon       Lois McDonald

There are many ways of layering.  As collage artists we might mostly use papers, however, layering can be done using many of the new and not so new art products that are offered: moulding pastes, crackling paste, texturing gels, gessos of different thicknesses, and many home products such as spackle, grout, drywall paste, etc.  Though Lois uses mostly papers, she will show you some other possibilities that could be useful and will demonstrate how she adheres and manipulates her various kinds of papers to make mountains and textured rocks.  Maybe you can even learn a new way to play!

Juror:  Julie Sasse

It has been a pleasure to serve as the juror for this exhibition of CASA members. Having gotten to know many of the artists from a workshop that I gave last year, it is clear that they have a passion for materials and for trying out new techniques. One of the most significant aspects of the works submitted for this exhibition is color-the brilliance of the colors in the majority of the works is notable. Connection to the land and the sky is also evident in both traditional landscapes and alluded to in the many abstract compositions. While traditional in concept for the most part, certain works in this exhibition stood out for their interesting use of materials such as stamps and found objects. In every work submitted, a true earnestness is present-the artists are enthusiastic in their search for a creative voice, revealed in each of the thoughtful, energetic, and imaginative works on view.

October Mini-Workshop

 Texture Workshop
 with Carol Ann

October 1, 2010, 1:00-4:00pm (following regular monthly meeting)

Cost:  $40.00

We will make texture practice sheets while we explore texturing techniques and materials using acrylic mediums, glazing, alcohol, waxed paper, plastic wrap, scraping, impasto, string, brayers, bubble wrap, and many others.  We will discuss the use of texture as a design element including when texture may or may not be appropriate, and how texture can create depth and enhance the visual impact of a painting.  Finally, we will work on an actual painting so that we can see first-hand the various ways that texture can be used.

See Carol Ann's work at www.carolannart.com

Registration forms will be available at the September meeting or contact:

"Exploring Collage" with David Adix

FALL THREE-DAY CASA WORKSHOP TO FEATURE DAVID ADIX

David Adix, a Tucson artist, taught a mini-workshop for CASA about a year and a half ago.  The reviews were so enthusiastic we invited him back to present a three-day workshop for us, "Exploring Collage" on Wednesday, October 27, Thursday, October 28 and Friday, October 29, 2010.  The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Goddard Hall, 4831 East 22nd Street, Tucson.  The class is suitable for beginners to advanced collage artists.

David is a classic collage artist in the manner of early 20th century artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris.  He uses found papers-often the most humble bits of paper such as hot-cup wraps, old maps and other papers, the older and the more worn out, the better-and turns them into distinctive and dynamic works of art.  His style of collage is also known as "pure" collage in that he uses found or purchased papers and usually does not paint his own papers or paint over his collages.  His signature work is long, narrow human figures made of found materials in assemblage.

David is represented by galleries in Tucson, Scottsdale, Santa Fe and Albuquerque.  Some of his out-of-state galleries are in California, Michigan, Vermont and Florida.

November 5, 2010, Mini-Workshop with Lois McDonald

Layering for Good Design with Lois McDonald

Learn fundamental composition and design princples with the collage technique of layering.  Use lightweight and heavyweight papers and gel medium to create a textural foundation.  Using just three acrylic colors, learn color mixing; how and where to place color; and value development to enhance the composition.  This class is geared for all but is especially important for beginning collage artists.

Check the website for a generic registration form for the mini-workshops to be held this year.  Registrations begin 60 days prior to the workshops.
Workshop date:  November 5, 2010, afternoon of the regular meeting date from 1:00-4:00pm.

2010-2011 Program Plans

We have an exciting program lined up for this year.  As program chair, I have been very busy finding instructors and topics which reflect the results of the survey our members filled out last season.  We have grown, and so has our diversity of skill levels and interest in exploring various collage media.  With this in mind, I have put together a program with a little bit of everything for everytbody.  You can look forward to learning more about photo transfer techniques, basic collage layering techniques, and two different artists who will present their approaches to assemblage.  We will explore the boundaries of acrylic mediums and texturing products, as well as polish up our design and composition skills.  In November, we will have an artist share her experience of the evolution of her work as a collage artist.  Throughout the CASA season, we will be seeing different artists' approaches to collage/assemblage.  I have strived to offer a variety of styles as well as mediums (metal, collage papers, acrylic mediums, canvas, foils, transfers, wood) and something for every skill level.

Message from the Presidents

With the September meeting behind us, we are now in full swing for shows, presentations, and workshops (both mini- and three day). We urge you to check your CASA newsletter monthly to keep up to date and to meet deadlines. So many activities are coming your way.

As fall approaches, it is a fitting time to remember why we are all members of CASA and reflect on the benefits of our membership. Our group provides numerous ways to network with and to meet other artists. Our programs and demonstrations help us to keep current, fresh, and creative in our artwork. We have opportunities to show our work in several venues and to participate in the contemporary art field. Our mini- and three day workshops feature high achieving artists who allow us to consider new techniques and formats for our work.  Additionally, we receive discounts at several art supply stores. Still, the best part of CASA is meeting regularly with friends and colleagues to discuss art and the art world. For this we are most grateful and thank you, the membership. We are looking forward to a wonderful year in CASA.

Urgent Need for Help Setting Up for Meetings

Program Chair Assistant Needed

Due to some health limitations, I am no longer able to do lifting.  I am looking for a person who is willing to help set up chairs and tables for the meetings.  I have a couple of people who are helping, but could use one more person.  With a team of two or three it should be easy.  I am willing to train a couple of people on how to set up and break down the mirror.  It takes two strong people.

Please e-mail me if you are interested in lending a hand.  I sure could use the help!
