For the last five months, I have been practicing Bikram yoga. At first, it wasn't easy but I was determined to discover the path to inner peace and natural healing. I have a job that requires physical and mental strength, so I needed to do something to help me keep a balance between my job and my personal life.
When I first started practicing Bikram yoga, my goal was to keep a commitment and not give up, but as I discovered day by day the benefits of Bikram I became more enthusiastic about making Bikram part of my life. I am so happy to see how my energy has improved to a point, even after a 12 hour day at work, I still look forward to those ninety minutes of hard work in class and the reward that comes after class. I can see my body changing without dieting. I am becoming more patient and more relaxed, and I can also concentrate and not lose focus as easily as before, but the most important benefit from Bikram yoga is realizing that I can put ninety minutes of my day aside to embark on a journey of health and inner peace for no one else but me.

I was in a car accident which resulted in painful neck and back injuries and after mentioning this to my friend, he introduced me to Bikram Yoga. He used to tell me how great Bikram Yoga was, but it was hard to stay in the hot room for ninety minutes. I have been practicing Bikram Yoga for about six months now, and til this day, I remember my first class and how hot it was. I used to think that I would never be able to get into a single posture. I struggle every single time I go to class; however, I love the satisfaction of knowing that at the end of class I spent ninety minutes meditating and focusing on myself.
Bikram Yoga has made me a different person. I am more focused, more positive, more calm, easy going and I am amazed with that change. Like I mentioned earlier, I have been practicing Bikram Yoga for about 6 months, and it has become a part of my life. I know that I want to continue practicing for as long as I can. My neck and back injuries have improved drastically because of Bikram Yoga.
Meeting Bikram Choudhury personally has complemented my practice even more. He was very friendly to me, and I found him to be a likeable human being. For the few minutes I met with Bikram, I got the impression that he is very humble and down to earth despite the fact that he is the world renowned "Hollywood Guru".
I am sharing my Bikram Yoga experience with my friends and family so they can try Bikram Yoga too.

I would have thought you were crazy had you predicted this is where I would be, one year from the beginning of my yoga practice. On January 9, 2010, I walked in the door of Bikram Yoga College of India in El Cajon. From that first step, I have come a long way. After attending for 6 of the first 7 days of the intro week, I was beyond hooked. The work was hard, but the benefits outweighed and continue to outweigh any sacrifice. Bikram yoga has helped me work through old injuries, calmed fears and take on challenges I never thought I would face, including regional asana yoga competition on November 14. Committing to competition was the most important step I took to take me deeper into my practice. As a participant, I was able to stretch myself, literally and figuratively, to become a better representative for this amazing yoga. I was nervous, of course, but the energy, inspiration and motivation I came away with continue to drive me to improve with each and every class, and I can't wait to take on that challenge again!
Aside from the feeling of personal accomplishment, I was overwhelmed by the support I received from Anthony, my fellow yogis, family and friends.
As a result of these two steps...the step in the door and the step toward representing our studio in competition, I am healthier, happier and more balanced. There is always room to improve, and I hope you will join me in a transformative 2011. Namaste to all.

When I started attending Bikram Yoga El Cajon last February, my body was in serious disrepair. From years of inconsistent workouts at the gym, lack of challenging cardio and too much good food that was less than nutrient dense, shall we say? I could not put my socks and shoes on without getting into just the right position. My lower back, hips, hamstrings, right elbow, right shoulder and the arches in my feet were in various levels of pain or so tight, I thought they might snap at any moment. People at work would ask me why I was limping. I would say, "I'm not limping, am I?"
In February of last year I told myself, it's time to make a change. I took my wife, Yasmin, to the Bikram Yoga El Cajon, and we spoke with Anthony. Yasmin had already tried Bikram Yoga years ago. I remember asking Anthony, "So, in about 8 weeks I'll be all better?" Anthony kind of chuckled at me, "Not really."
So the journey began. The first 7 months were much like my gym and running workouts, inconsistent at best. However, the last 4 months, I have been very dedicated. I am currently in the midst of a 30 day challenge. I have missed only two days since December 26th, a double made up for one missed day and I owe a double.
I am now feeling more in control of my body but I know I have a long way to go, a lifetime. I truly believe, "Yoga fixes everything."

A Prescription From Doc
Do the yoga and do it everyday!
Bikram yoga had everything to do with bringing me to a higher level of fitness. Ten years ago, I weighed 121lbs more. The yoga and a disciplined pesco-vegetarian diet with water and coconut juice has put me in the best shape of my life.
Yoga helped my swimming, weightlifting, dancing, golf and tennis. When the younger guys are standing around and the girls ask me to dance, I give thanks for the blessing Bikram has been in my life.
I have my own swami, yogi glow towel (we glow not sweat) aka magic flying carpet for class. Literally and metaphorically yoga can transport you to a higher plane of existence.
For Halloween, I carved a crying pumpkin with the caption "Life without the yoga". Yoga has enabled me to grow younger. I contend everyone practice yoga. All human beings do postures all day, most do the "bad yoga". Bikram Yoga teaches you how to correctly align your body and do the "good yoga" healing your spine and energizing your life.
Bring the blessing of Bikram Yoga into your life and you will receive great blessings that you might go forth and more fully become a blessing in every area of your life. |

Open Letter to New Students:
Written by B. Simek
(borrowed from our friends in Sweden)
Dear New Student, Welcome. Like it or not you are now a part of the Bikram Yoga family. Whether today's class will become something that is laughed about with friends and never attempted again, a daily routine, an occasional pastime or obsession, your experience today will stay with you forever. This means I have ninety minutes, and ninety minutes only to show you a practice I have dedicated a part of my life, my heart and much of my body to. So listen carefully, because this is important, this can change your life in ways you never thought possible. I know the room is hot, and the poses are difficult. This is not because we are trying to prove something. This is because these specific elements: the postures, the heat, the mirrors, the style of teaching - are perfectly combined to heal your body, heart and mind. I know there are a lot of people. This is not because the studio is interested in a big pay-day. This is because the more we can practice together, the more we can share energy. Your neighbors will help you get through class, inspire you, become your friends and maybe even your future fiance (it's happened more than once!) So be kind. Be patient. Because the more patient you can be with people here, the more patient you will be with them out there in the world. I know my voice is loud. This is not because I want to dominate you. My voice is the best tool I have, along with the dialogue (the directions), to help you through your class today. When you feel weak, my voice will be strong to support you. When you are tired my voice will be energetic to help you off the floor. When you are discouraged, I will encourage you. All this I will do with my volume, my intonation, my words. I want you to hear just how much I care about you and your practice. Yes, our outfits are small. This is not because we are vain. This is because it is hot and because when you can see your body in the mirror fully, you can more easily make adjustments and learn to appreciate what you see. Small clothes stay out of our way, so we can focus more on our practice than on adjusting our shorts for triangle. In time, we've learned in this room that contrary to what the world says, every body is beautiful and every body should be appreciated. So we wear short shorts and we LOVE them on us and on each other. No, you cannot talk. Not because I want to silence you. I want your voice to fill the halls, the change-rooms and lobby. I want your voice to be one of the many threads that builds the ever-expanding web of our Bikram Yoga community. But in the hot room, I want you to listen. First to me, so that you can do the class safely, but more importantly to yourself. I know you try hard and listen to so many other people all day. Today, you start to learn to listen to yourself: your breath, your heart, your true thoughts. Enjoy that opportunity, don't waste it by chatting. You must stay still New Student. Not because I want to control you. You must stay still so you can let go of all distractions and connect to the vast benefits of this practice. You work hard in your poses to open your body, and when you stay still your cells recover and begin the process of healing. Give your body the chance to heal. I know sometimes my jokes are not funny. But we do not call this the "torture chamber" because we enjoy your discomfort. I try to make light of how hard this yoga is because we all know that it is hard. Every teacher you will have, including me, has cried here, hurt here, wanted to leave here. So we joke because we understand how hard this is. The fact that we persevere is the one thing that connects us all in the hot room. I want this experience to be at least a little bit fun. I am not correcting you because I think badly of your effort, New Student. I know you have taken other yoga classes, or your body is aching from your injuries and you have been through a lot in your life. Knowing all of these things makes me want to help you even more. And the best way I know how to help you, is to teach you how to do the postures to the best of your ability. I promise your best is enough. If today, you simply imagine your posture a different way because of a correction, then you are on your way to an improved practice, body and life. It's okay to feel emotional. This is a safe space, we've all been there. Remember this is a place of healing and sometimes your body hangs on to your emotions even when the mind has released them. Just cry, everyone will think it is sweat anyway. Come back New Student. You did well today. Remember the worst class is the one you don't come to. I can't wait for you to see how this series can change your life and I am here to help every step of the way. Love,Your Bikram Yoga Teacher |

Congratulations 30 Day Challengers
You Did It!!!
Everyday we saw you come in to the studio to take class in a good mood, bad mood, full of energy, exhausted, broken, struggling, and every day getting stronger. Your practice has improved ten fold. Now that this 30 day challenge is over, try not to let your practice and attendance slip. 3 times minimum practice per week is what Bikram suggests to us all. In an ideal world, we should practice every day but with busy lives and obligations that is not possible; so, stick with 3 days minimum per week for now. We lost a few along the way due to injury. Your effort was noticed. Come back. Ryan Selman had to drop out due to a bad case of poison ivy, but he says he is going to start over Feb. 1.

· Don't wiggle your fingers or toes.
· Keep your stomach sucked in and your chest up.
· Don't lean forward.
· Keep finger tips same level as tops of shoulders. Kris Sarka's Awkward Pose
I was a runner so I thought I had strong leg muscles until I started practicing Bikram Yoga and attempted the Awkward Pose, In the 2nd part, my legs shook so hard, I lost my balance and couldn't stand up on my toes with my back straight. I do notice that every week my awkward pose gets a little stronger. My legs don't start shaking right away. I can hold it a couple of seconds before the trembling begins, but the instructors always say "shaking is good". So, I go with that. These days, my back is straighter and most of the time I don't topple over. As awkward as this pose is, I know it is worth it. My leg muscles are more defined and the fat is slowly melting away. |

Yoga Etiquette
There has probably been a day for all of us when we just wanted to run out of the hot room screaming. The only goal as a new student is to stay in the room. As we begin to practice more, our goals in the hot room change; but, staying for 90 minutes should always be the focus.
As a student who always tries to stay in the room for the whole 90 minutes, it becomes a distraction when other
students leave the room.
However, for me, the most distracting part is not that some people leave the room. It is that they do so loudly. So, for whatever reason you have to leave the room, it would be greatly appreciated if you did so quietly, without slamming the door on your way out or in, and if you did so between postures.
~ your fellow yogi
Yoga Etiquette Recap
1. Don't leave the room to take showers during class.
2. Place your mat on the line so that your mat is in the middle of the line.
3. Be on time.
4. If you leave the room, please leave and enter silently. |
