Please join us in the Nancy Amsden Building to watch and discuss this unique family drama.

Whale Rider posterWhale Rider 2 Whale Rider 3

On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs, always the first-born, always male, have been considered Paikea's direct descendants. Pai, an 11-year-old girl in a patriarchal New Zealand tribe, believes she is destined to be the new chief. But her grandfather Koro is bound by tradition to pick a male leader. Pai loves Koro more than anyone in the world, but she must fight him and a thousand years of tradition to fulfill her destiny.

Unity World Day of Prayer

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Unity created World Day of Prayer - the second Thursday in September - as a global effort to uplift our world in shared prayer consciousness. Since its inception 18 years ago, this sacred initiative has supported more than 15 million people with prayer.

You can be part of this sacred day - from wherever you are - in several ways:

·         Fill out and return your Prayer List (which will available soon at your church) with the names of those you would like us to bless during a 24-hour prayer vigil in the Silent Unity Chapel on September 8.

·         Experience the dynamic and vibrant flow of open minds and hearts by joining with thousands of others in prayer on September 8. Join us in affirming throughout the day: We are channels through which Spirit illumines the world.

·         Attend an event at Unity Village, watch a live-streamed event and/or find a participating Unity church or center near you.

10 UNEXPECTED CLEANERS

WHITE BREAD - Use it to: Dust an oil painting. Gently dab a slice of white bread over the surface to pick up dirt and grime.

KETCHUP - Use it to: Remove tarnish from copper and brass cookware. Squeeze ketchup onto a cloth and rub it on pots and pans. They should go back to their coppery color in minutes. Rinse with warm water and dry with a towel.

OATMEAL- Use it to: Scrub very dirty hands. Make a thick paste of oatmeal and water; rinse well.

RICE - Use it to: Clean the inside of a vase or a thin-necked bottle. Fill three quarters of the vessel with warm water and add a tablespoon of uncooked rice. Cup your hand over the opening, shake vigorously, and rinse.

TEA - Use it to: Scour rusty garden tools. Brew a few pots of strong black tea. When cool, pour into a bucket. Soak the tools for a few hours. Wipe each one with a cloth. (Wear rubber gloves or your hands will be stained.)

Silent Unity Prayer Service

Wednesdays 11:30-Noon

Along with Unity churches and centers around the globe, we hold a 30-minute Silent Unity Prayer Service each week, using that month's script from Unity Village.

Around the circle we participate in repetitions of  the Silence, affirmation, words for thought, the Silence - as in the following sampling of July's service.

I am calm and serene

I allow a deep cleansing breath to bring my awareness to this moment.  As I become still, I remember that I am one with God.  I choose to release any anxious thoughts and let a calm peace wash over my soul.  I am serene as I let go and relax into God's goodness.  I am nourished by God's ever-present love in the silence ....

Spirit inspires my decisions ... etcetera

The energy of God revitalizes me ... etcetera

I live in an abundant universe ... etcetera

My inner peace contributes to a peaceful world ... etcetera

We'd love to have you join us for this mid-week spiritual refresher.
