Christmas Came Early for Terrier Breeders this Year!

Roxanna and Leo Springer would not give up their dream breeding! They had tried cooled semen and Leo also drove across the country to live breed their bitch, Sean. But the cooled semen failed and the live breeding ended up in AIs due to Sean's terrier reaction of "don't touch me!"
This last season the male was sent out here to California. The progesterone testing started and Sean stalled her rise around the 10th day. The male enjoyed the California sun and Sean's company but was not sexually aroused. The progesterone level didn't resume climbing until 5 days later and then the visiting suitor started his studly behavior and Sean stood easily for natural breedings.
Progesterone levels do vary with individual bitches. Some bitches stall due to vaccinations, stress of travel, flea/tick medication. Some bitches never have a progesterone rise above 5-6ng which we interpret as a non ovulatory cycle.
The Springers' terrier tenacity resulted in a litter of 11 pups! Sean made up for the previous "misses". |
