If it Moves, Can it Fertilize?
On several recent occasions, stud owners have wanted to send us cooled semen several days in advance of the bitch being ready. They say they are using extenders that are keeping the sperm motile for days. Dr. Stefano Romagnoli cautions, " Keep in mind that a motile semen sample may already have lost its fertilizing capacity: it is generally believed that motility lasts about twice as long as fertilizing ability.-"-Canine artificial insemination with fresh, refrigerated, and frozen semen(Proceedings of the Veterinary Sciences Congress 2002, SPCV. Oeiras, 10-12 Out.pp167-170)
Canine Cryobank believes it is in the best interest of our clients to have the cooled semen arrive the days we have determined the bitch's most fertile period. We know of no studies where bitches have been bred with 10 day old semen only! Some research shows acceptable aggultination and penetration of mouse ova. That is not convincing enough for breeders who have spent $1000s on stud fees and bitch preparation. Fresh, cooled semen means day old semen to some breeders and 10 day old semen to others. Bitch and stud owners should be in agreement about the timing of the shipping to avoid disappointing results.

When Jackie Athon Hodsdon's dog, CH V-Armin vom Ochsentor, died at age
seven, she was understandably heartbroken. "I did not expect to lose Armin at only seven years old due to unfortunate circumstances," Jackie explains. Yet the pain would have been immeasurably worse if Jackie was bidding a permanent farewell to Armin, and his entire champion German bloodline as well. Yet this is a circumstance that Jackie would never be faced with. As a successful GSD breeder who holds international prestige, Jackie continues to make sound business decisions and never makes the novice mistake of leaving anything to chance. And so, like she has done with so many of her amazing dogs before and after Armin, Jackie dutifully brought him in to our registered facility for collection, and his frozen semen has resided securely in one of our liquid nitrogen tanks ever since. As for the future; An ultrasound recently confirmed that Uzi vom Grunenfeld is going to have a litter with Armin's frozen semen, and Jackie can breath a sigh of relief, knowing that she did right by her deceased dog, and has only this left to say : "Thank goodness I did a collection!"

More GSD news:
A very old German Shepherd has not been feeling very well as of late. Not wanting for her dog to spend the final years of his life in a medicated haze, a kind-hearted client made the choice of treating her dog with stem cells from his own body. The geriatric GSD has not sprung back to his puppy-like-youth; we would be irresponsible to make such radical claims. However, it is reassuring for dog owners with older pets to know that there are safe alternatives to groggy medications . If you or someone you know has an ill or lame dog, or if you would simply like to learn more about the exciting new world of Canine Stem Cell Therapy, do not hesitate in making your reservation to our May 2011 Canine Cryopreservation Lecture. |
