Q:
What is SEO and why is important to my business?

A: SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and can help potential customers find your business on the internet. The goal of SEO is to gain the highest possible position for your company's website in a search engine's "natural" search results. Those are the results that appear in the main body of the screen on Google for example, rather than the "paid" listings that appear on the right hand side or top of the results.

By optimizing your website you can achieve higher rankings in the search engines. There are many ways of doing this and while most of it can be done by a non-SEO trained person you will get more value by hiring a SEO professional.

ANDREW WEST TO SPEAK AT PREMIER PROFESSIONALS

Andrew West, Senior Solutions Architect for CIO Solutions, will be presenting on IT Management Options at the upcoming Premier Professionals meeting.

Santa Barbara - October 1, 2010 - Andrew West, Senior Solutions Architect for the Santa Barbara based IT firm CIO Solutions, will give a presentation on the ever expanding options of managing an IT (Information Technology) network. Mr. West will speak at the monthly meeting of the Premier Professionals group, which is comprised of local entrepreneurs and strives to educate and empower local business owners.

Mr. West discussed the available options for managing an IT network and spoke about both traditional and new options. Some of the traditional options for managing an IT network include having an IT administrator in-house or outsourcing the management to an IT company. While these options are a good fit for some companies, other companies are looking at new ways of IT management including hostingapplications, SaaS (Software as a Service), HaaS (Hardware as a Service) or a combination of these options.

Mr. West spoke particularly on when it was a right decision to rent or own IT hardware and software. According to Mr. West, "The same logic that applies to real estate or other assets should apply to Information Technology as well. By looking at certain factors it can be determined which is the best choice for your business."

Android OS: A Review - Richard Clark, Remote Engineer

Richard ClarkAndroid is an open source, Linux-based operating system that was initially designed for the smartphone format. Over the past six months, phone sales for handsets running Android OS have swallowed up a full third of the market.

Introduced in the Fall of 2008, it has quickly risen from its humble beginnings on the T-Mobile G1, to encompass a wide range of top-selling devices across multiple carriers, worldwide. In the U.S., every major carrier now has an Android phone in its lineup: Verizon touts the Droid line of phones, while Sprint offers the sleek HTC Evo, and T-Mobile offers a number of Android devices, including the Samsung Vibrant and the G2, successor to the aforementioned G1.

More devices are rolling-out each quarter, each sleeker and more powerful than the last. The biggest problem that consumers face is making the choice between devices. Android phones definitely have the market momentum right now, and there's no slowing in sight.

5 Things to Consider When Purchasing a Monitor - Michael Biancone, Sales
Michael B

A big part of my job revolves around quoting equipment for a wide variety of users, most of whom I have never met. Often times a given piece of computer equipment has many options to choose from: mouse, keyboard, headset and monitor to name a few.  At first glance it would appear to be a simple task but quoting a new monitor for a client can become a very involved project. These are highly personal items and, after all, I am not the one going to be using these essential items on a daily basis.  There are a series of questions that, depending on the answers, can greatly affect the final choice. Monitor 1

What follows is a basic guide to some key features that, with your help, will make it easier for us to select a monitor that is best suited for your needs.  And, by the way, if you are still using an old CRT monitor (think huge ogre compared to sleek elegance) you should read on ...

Employee Spotlight  - Andrew West, Sr. Solutions Architect
Andrew West, CTO
Andrew Davidson West is not a local boy. While he now considers Santa Barbara his home he was born far far away on a little island called Hawaii. Even though Andrew now resides on the Central Coast and has created an impressive career in Information Technology, he has still been able to maintain his relaxed island attitude.

Andrew is a man of extremes, part avid technology geek and part extreme environmentalist. He has been able to bring his two worlds together in the newly popular solar energy movement. He has been working to get his home running off of renewable and sustainable energy (aka: The Sun). In addition to solar energy, Andrew and his wife grow organic fruits and vegetables and support eco-friendly businesses in the community.

Andrew enjoys being in nature but also enjoys the thrill of fast cars and loud music. He recently purchased his first motorcyle which is now his primary mode of transportation. He DJs on the side and has been featured at many local clubs.

Here are a few of Andrew's favorite things:

Favorite Color: Purple
Favorite Book: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Favorite Movie: Matrix
Favorite Food: Popcorn
Favorite Motto/Quote: Wu Wei (a Taoist saying that roughly translates "Go with the Flow)

Andrew's dream is to live the simple life and to teach people to do the same.
