Green IT
Greetings!,

In this issue we wanted to highlight some of the Green initiatives that both the IT industry as a whole and CIO are implementing.

The below articles discuss a few ways that CIO has 'gone Green'. We are constantly trying to reduce our environmental impact and believe that the current trends in IT are helping us achieve this goal.

Cheers,
John Petote

Q:
I have been hearing so much about 'Cloud Computing', can you elaborate on this concept? How can I utilize it for my business needs?

A: The term 'cloud' in cloud computing is a metaphor for the internet. This image comes from the drawings of computer network diagrams and represents the underlying infrastructure of a network.

The term has a technical meaning which is often debated amongst tech enthusiasts. However, for most businesses the technical definition is irrelevant, what is relevant is the value proposition delivered by this new trend.

Cloud Computing enables businesses to purchase applications (computational resources) without an upfront capital investment but rather for a monthly fee. In addition cloud computing allows for business to pay for the capacity when they need it rather than for projected max capacity. Another characteristic of cloud computing is that the equipment to provide the computational resources is not located on the business premises, it is located somewhere else on the internet (in the cloud).

In other words Cloud Computing lets a business pay for IT/Applications/Computing Resources with a monthly "per user" fee without any large upfront costs and no onsite equipment. If the cloud computing solution is for a single application then you may hear the term SaaS (Software as a Service).

Really Green IT - Andrew West, Sr. Solutions Architect
Andrew West, CTOHave you noticed that everything, from companies to the products that they sell, is suddenly "green" almost overnight?  Is it possible that the same dish detergent that you bought last year is really green this year?  If you're as skeptical as I am, it's probably because your intuition is right on.  "Greenwashing" is a common phenomenon whereby companies intentionally highjack the Green bandwagon in order to market their offerings to an environmentally conscious consumer base, often without making any changes at all other than the label on the package.

The Information Technology industry - while far from perfect - has made real and significant strides towards energy and materials efficiency in the past 5 years.  While incremental improvements are continually being made in low-power components and manufacturing processes, virtualization is king with its clear and immediate green contributions...READ MORE

3D Technology: A Review - Chase Christian, Engineer
Chase Christian, EngineerIt seems like there's hardly a new movie released to theaters now that isn't featured in 3D. With the huge commercial success of Avatar last year, many movie studios are jumping at the opportunity to get onto the 3D bandwagon. Commercials on television have been saturated with companies trying to sell 3D monitors and TVs, even Nintendo is making a 3D version of the Game Boy. But is 3D truly a technology that's ready to take its place next to HD in our homes and offices?

The key detractor of any 3D implementation is that...READ MORE
Think Brown, Not Green! -  Ryan Popke, Shipping and Receiving
Ryan PopkeHere at CIO it's been a year of thinking brown. Brown boxes to be exact. Over the course of the last year we have switched over to a new way of doing things in our shipping department. We have purchased exactly 0 boxes and eliminated all of the packing materials needed to ship our products out, except for the tape. I'm still working on a solution for that.

It all started with the review of the old system. We would buy different sized boxes for different shipments and then keep them in stock for their eventual use. Packing peanuts and foam inserts filled the stock room as they were a necessity in almost every shipment.  Most of the boxes that we received on a daily basis were broken down and recycled. This I think is the way that most shipping departments work.

I then looked at the size and shipping costs of those size boxes and compared them... READ MORE
Employee Spotlight  - Burt Ribet, Sr. Engineer
AllisonThis is Burt Ribet's second time around working for CIO Solutions. Burt first worked for John Petote 20 years ago, he then went and worked at UCSB and has made a full circle, returning to CIO. Burt came onboard (again) about 6 months ago as CIO's newest Senior Engineer. Burt enjoys the challenging nature of IT and looks forward every day to working with clients and finding solutions. He also finds the fun, laid back environment of CIO to be entertaining and welcoming.

Burt Joseph Ribet was born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and grew up in Goleta (La Patera area). He attended La Patera, Goleta Valley Junior High and Dos Pueblos High School. He now lives in Buellton with his wife of 18 years and three children (two daughters, 12 and 9, and one son, 14).

Hobbies: Burt enjoys anything technical, especially studying IT issues or programming languages (including but not limited to: C++, C#, Perl, Java, PHP, HTML, and VB). He also loves anything that has to do with sports including soccer, basketball, dodgeball, kickball and volleyball. Burt is also very involved with Christian leadership and is active in youth leadership programs as well.

Dreams/Aspirations: Burt states that he is already living a dream, he has a wonderful family and a great life. He tries to live in the moment and is grateful for what he has.

Favorite Color: Blue

Favorite Food: Almost anything, just a lot of it. If he had to choose one food it would probably be sushi.

Favorite Book/Movie: Burt is not a big fiction reader but loves to relax with a good technical manual or programming language book. He has some difficulty watching and enjoying movies because he has a hard time of 'letting go' and accepting the crafted realities of Hollywood. Most of the movies he ends up watching are based on history.

Quote: "I long to do a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to do small tasks as if they are great and noble" -- Helen Keller

Interesting fact: Burt's family is his life. Everything he does is for the betterment of his wife and his children. Like the quote above says, he hopes someday to do something great for the world, but for right now he is just trying to make his sphere of influence that much better because of his presence.
