Here's an excerpt from my chapter Roadmap to Relationship Success. 
What steps can we take to create lives and relationships that are truly successful?"
(Previously I shared the first three steps on my Roadmap to Relationship Success.
The first and perhaps most important step you can take is to love yourself. Step 2 is to know what you want and believe you can have it. Step #3 on my roadmap to relationship success has two-parts. (1): Let go of the past, and (2): Choose joy over fear.Please contact me if you'd like more information on these critical steps.)
Step #4. Make relationships a priority. Don't take your relationships for granted. They are like flowers in your garden that need attention and nurturing. Make time and space for the people in your life that you care about, and show them that you care. According to Dr. Richard Moss, visionary and author, "the greatest gift you can ever give someone is the purity of your attention." That means when you are with someone, be fully attentive, listen with interest and care. Don't go out to dinner with someone and spend half of the evening talking with other people on your separate cell phones!
Making relationships a priority means showing an interest in people. For example, my client John used to show up at events, sit in the corner with a drink and make no effort to connect with people. Now he is less self-conscious, more interested in others, and having better conversations. John has come to appreciate his family and colleagues more and to let them know how important they are to him. He used to feel uncomfortable around people and now he's more alive and engaged in his life, having more fun and meeting more people.
Like John, you can make relationships a priority even if you don't have the kind of romantic relationship you want. If you don't have a partner and you want one, make finding a partner a priority! Make time to meet people, show up at events that interest you, make eye contact and connect with others, let your friends, family and co-workers know you're looking, and use the Internet to connect with people. Lena met her husband on the dance floor doing free-form ecstatic dance, something they both love. Carrie met her boyfriend at the New Age church that is an integral part of both of their lives.
If you want a partner, get out and do the things you love, make time for a partner in your schedule, and make room for a partner in your life. Make a habit of showing up fully present and giving your full attention to others, with interest and appreciation. People will love to be around you!
