Greetings!
January Greetings to you! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and your new year is off to a great start.
Little Matthew is now one year old, climbing stairs and getting into everything. He likes practicing his new words: fish (he loves aquariums), banana, cheese (yes, he's an eater!), tree (he loves being outside), hi (he's very friendly) and of course, mama! We are enjoying him immensely and he seems to be having a pretty good time!
I continue to work part time and currently have four spaces for individual and couples clients and I am starting both in-person and telecourse groups in February 2012, for those who are ready for more love in their life.

What steps can we take to create lives and relationships that are truly successful?"
(Previously I shared the first two steps on my Roadmap to Relationship Success.
The first and perhaps most important step you can take is to love yourself. Step 2 is to know what you want and believe you can have it. Please contact me if you'd like more information on these critical steps.)
Step #3 on my roadmap to relationship success has two-parts. (1): Let go of the past, and (2): Choose joy over fear. I see many people who have beenhurt, disappointed or rejected in past relationships and now are afraid to get too close to anyone for fear of getting hurt again. If you've made it to adulthood, you've undoubtedly experienced hurt and disappointment in both your personal and professional relationships. Some of us hang on to those relationships and have a hard time letting go.
When I was in graduate school, I was obsessed with making things work with my long-term boyfriend. Despite continual upsets, I was convinced that we were supposed to be together. Finally, I learned that if a romantic relationship feels like a disappointing project, it's not the right relationship. It was time to let it go. But that didn't mean I had to let go of my vision for a loving partnership. I'm very grateful that I was able to let go of my past relationships, so I could be available for the easy, joyful marriage I share with my husband now.
Over the years, I've heard many stories about relationships and events from the past, and fears that persist in the present. For instance, Belinda, now in her 60s, told me that as a girl her parents' anger kept her fearful and quiet most of the time. In her first marriage, to a domineering man, Belinda often felt afraid. When we started working together, she carried around her old fear especially when it came to letting men into her life. Today, Belinda remembers that she is no longer a dependent child, but rather a wonderful mother to her own children and a very successful businesswoman. Today, as a wise adult, she takes great care of herself, and has only kind and caring men in her life. For the first time ever, Belinda asks for what she wants in all her relationships, and she has shifted from feeling depressed to feeling joyful.
What fears have you brought with you from your past? When are you going to let them go?
The good news is you don't have to stay stuck in fear or be limited by your past, like your grandparents or even your parents might have done. By letting go of the past, you are choosing joy over fear. I've seen this happen repeatedly. A former client, Carrie, had a difficult divorce, and was afraid that the only kind of relationship she could have was a challenging one with someone who didn't understand her. She learned to let go of the past and let go of her fears, she became clear about what really mattered to her, believed she could have love with a compatible partner, and she trusted herself to make wise choices. Carrie surrounded herself with people who were supportive and uplifting, and focused on what she appreciated rather than what she lacked. Over a year ago, Carrie met a man who she says "fits my vision like a glove." I saw them together recently and they were both glowing.
What if you could trust yourself to make wise choices and choose to have kind and caring people in your life? It takes courage to choose joy over fear, but the payoff is very rewarding. Those who found loving relationships after working with me would agree that their lives transformed when they let go of the past and chose joy over fear. |
