 | Passport to Manhood College Tour participants at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA
|
This fall, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington's Dunbar Alexandria-Olympic Branch members participated in the Passport to Manhood College Tour, visiting five universities including: Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University and Virginia Commonwealth University.
During this three-day higher learning excursion, 12 young men ages 16 to 18 visited college campus learning facilities and dormitories, and interacted with staff, faculty and students while sharing personal life experiences and bonding with their peers.
"Passport to Manhood not only promotes higher learning and increases interest in the college experience, but it also fosters pathways to opportunity as these teenagers mature and grow to become men," said Theressa Green, BGCGW's director of character, leadership and teen programs.
"This has been a life-changing experience for our members and has truly transformed these young men," said Tammy Mujica, branch director at BGCGW's Dunbar Alexandria-Olympic Branch. " These students are now more focused, optimistic and even excited about the educational opportunities ahead."
In addition to the college tour, Club members also took the first step of the college admissions process and completed an admission application to the college of their choice and discussed SAT and ACT preparation programs, federal financial aid, grants and other scholarship opportunities.
Through programs like Passport to Manhood, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington continues to put its mission into action and provides educational enrichment opportunities for local youth.

BGCGWs Virginia Clubs Awarded $210,000 to Support Life Skills Training for 500 Local Youth
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington announced a three-year, $210,000 grant from the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation, a division of the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, to teach the LifeSkills Training program to nearly 500 children at local clubs and schools in the Northern Virginia region.
Students participating in the program learn skills to aid in developing a positive self-image, how to resist peer pressure and how to avoid being influenced by advertisements and the media.
"LifeSkills Training provides valuable skills to help children learn to lead healthy lifestyles and avoid peer pressure as teens," said Stuart Michie, director of health and life skills at Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.
"It's not enough to tell young people not to smoke or use drugs," says Michie. "Teaching the students good decision-making skills and allowing them to participate in tobacco- and drug-prevention activities, helps them to learn and to make good decisions."
