Muslims and Jews in AmericaEdited by Reza Aslan and Aaron J. Hahn Tapper Jews and Muslims make up less than 3% of the total population of the United States. Yet, despite their relatively small numbers, the members of these two minority groups often find themselves the focus of a disproportionate amount of media attention, particularly when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Beyond such international issues, American Jews and American Muslims find themselves struggling with similar inter-communal concerns when it comes to matters like education (for example tensions between student populations of Jews and Muslims on university campuses), politics (such as the swearing in of the first Muslim Congressman in the House of Representatives, Keith Ellison, or the omnipresent emails and robo-calls linking President Obama to the Muslim community that emerged during the 2008 Presidential election), or even pop culture (think of such recent Hollywood productions asKingdom in Heaven, Munich, Paradise Now, and Traitor, to name but a few). Continued here.

Saturday, October 20 · 2 pm · Plestcheeff Auditorium, Seattle Art Museum Free concert-with-commentary. On October 10th, Seattle Art Museum launches Elles, a landmark exhibition organized by the Centre Pompidou in Paris that explores how pioneering women artists have helped shape the major movements of modern and contemporary art. MOR's musical program features Letter to Warsaw, a musical portrait of one woman's intimate first-hand account of life in the grip of the Holocaust. American composer Thomas Pasatieri's powerful song cycle sets six texts that poet/cabaret artist Pola Braun wrote while in the Warsaw ghetto and in the Majdanek concentration camp, where she perished in 1943. It opens a window to the emotional life of all women trapped in the web of Holocaust tragedy, and tells a story reminding us that each victim of the Holocaust was an individual, not a statistic. Music sample here.
