Share your culture with the world!
CIEE is seeking loving host families for high school exchange students who will arrive in the area in August. Open your heart and your home; share our community and Judaism. CIEE high school students stay with their host families for either 1 to 2 semesters (five or ten months) while attending your local high school. By having these students live with American families, we break down the barriers that divide people, not only across international borders, but also within our own community. CIEE students have their own funds for school lunches, clothing, and personal spending needs as well as medical insurance. A family can be one with children or not and single people can also be hosts. Please call Lynn at (206) 368-0493 and make a difference in our world. Council on International Educational Exchange. |

The Bar Mitzvah and the Beast: One Family's Cross-Country Ride of Passage by Bike, by Matt Biers-Ariel
Amateur bike rider, father of three, and everyday public school teacher, Matt Biers-Ariel never dreamed of riding a bike across the United States. But then his hard-to-impress teenage son, Yonah, refused to have a bar mitzvah as he approached age thirteen. No dancing with grandma or chanting traditional prayers? Something had to be done to celebrate this rite of passage.
So Matt, his wife Djina, Yonah, and little brother Solomon decided to saddle up for a physical ride of passage -- one that would take them 3,804 miles by bicycle from the waters of the Pacific Ocean, over the Rockies, through Midwest small towns, and all the way to Washington D.C. Armed with ibuprofen, several gallons of Gatorade, and one unpredictable tandem bike (the "Beast"), the Biers-Ariel family cycled across the middle of America, chatting with colorful characters along the way, roasting marshmallows at campgrounds, and quarreling over the state of climate change, religious identity, and several flat tires. They also collected thousands of signatures on a self-made global-warming petition calling for the U.S. to undergo its own rite of passage -- one of energy conservation.
"The Bar Mitzvah and the Beast is a funny, thoughtful memoir of one ordinary American family's extraordinary journey by bicycle, and an enlightening, warm exploration of the bond between a spiritual, nature-loving father and his ambivalent, computer game-loving son." --Amazon review.Mountaineers Books, February 21, 2012; 272 pages.
Matt Biers-Ariel will read from his book on Tuesday, June 19, at 7 pm at Gregg's Cycle Bellevue (105 Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue). |

Hadiyah Carlyle reads from her memoir, Torch in the Dark
Torch in the Dark is an insightful look at how Hadiyah pioneered as one of the first women since World War II to enter the trades as a union welder. Welding became for her a path to self-reliance and economic survival and a metaphor for healing from early childhood trauma. The story of Hadiyah's journey to healing offers profound inspiration for anyone struggling with issues of abuse and oppression. The book also offers an insightful perspective on the culture of the 60's and 70's. www.torchinthedark.com.
