Dear Kadimaniks and friends,

It is the season to be reflecting on what it means to say "for we were once slaves in the land of Egypt." This year, Pesach comes in the midst of the optimism and uncertainty of the Arab Spring and the Occupy Movement. The Kadima Haggadah reminds us that Jews have traditionally used the Seder as more than the annual occasion to renew an abstract commitment to social justice. Action for social justice requires us to debate and wrestle with difficult concrete issues. We need a community in which to think and debate, just as we need a community in which to act.

So we propose a focus for Pesach thinking and discussion: What do we need from Kadima as a progressive Jewish social justice community?

To wrestle with this question, we are hoping that members of the Kadima community can come together to form a Kadima Social Justice Group. Please join us for a first gathering--a Cinco de Mayo potluck dinner for schmoozing and discussion.

We are all too busy, maybe a little bit burnt-out, many of us are involved in a multiplicity of activisms. For some of us it has been a long time since we have been able to get to a political meeting. We are wondering if you, like us, have been craving a forum in which we can reflect and renew our resolve to be active in social justice work. For some of us, this is what brought us to Kadima in the first place. Help us imagine what this space could be. Bring your interests, questions, and commitments.

Here are some of ours. How do we work toward

  • Sustained work in support of our homeless neighbors?
  • Confronting police and judicial injustice in our community?
  • Seeking an appropriate response to the rhetoric and potential threat of attacks on Iran?
  • Developing and sustaining a progressive Jewish response to the evolving reality of Israeli occupation in Palestine?
  • Collective response to critical events that otherwise leave us flat-footed, whether the shooting of John T. Williams or the execution of Troy Davis?
We look forward to starting the conversation and seeing friends current, old and new. Come join us!
