EPI & NLA

2011 3rd Quarter Newsletter

September 2011

Welcome!

Twenty Eleven is in full swing and EPI has been very active conducting programs and preparing for future programs. We've also had a number of NLA and EP social happenings and activities and are planning many more. Networking is key to acquiring work and that is one reason we make the extra effort to have social get togethers.

EPI on display at the Police Security Expo in Atlantic City

Police Security Expo

In June, The Police Security Expo in Atlantic City celebrated its 25th Anniversary and EPI was there to celebrate their quarter century event. EPI had a booth for two days and we met many prospective students. Instructors John Negus and Jerry Heying shared booth duties. NLA Members George Boka, Elton Sh, Louis McNeil, to name a few, came to take in the expo and to visit. Following the Expo, a One Day Introduction to Executive Protection course was held with several interested students.

Programs in Texas and Chicago

In our effort to reach a broader market, EPI took its one day Introduction to Executive Protection and Protection Response Tactics (PRT) program to College Station Texas (home of A&M University) and to Chicago, hosted by our friends at Protection Resources International (PRI). Stacy Roberts and Alan Baker work well as a team, with Alan demonstrating how to handle an aggressor (Stacy). The One Day Introduction to Executive Protection also serves well as a refresher and we have many EPI graduates attend to learn and to add experience and share testimonies. In each location, attendees to the one day expressed serious interest to attend the 7 day program and future EPI programs.

International EP Conference in Las Vegas Hosted by ESI Alumini

EPI once again was well represented with 12 NLA members attending the EP conference in Las Vegas. Prior to the conference, there was a shooting match, the EP Speed Steel Challenge. Jason Thorsett and Jerry Heying participated with the ESI Alumni members who we got to know from the year before. Everyone had a great time and there were lots of prizes including a handgun from FN, and a rifle from Olympic Arms, as well as many other prizes.

The conference started with a social in a location that became quite familiar with most of us in attendance, the Sea Horse Lounge, in the lobby of Caesars Palace. The NLA hosted a casual mixer the second night of the conference and we again had 12-15 NLA Members attend along with many ESI alumni and NABA members too. We all had a good time networking and socializing.

The conference attendance was slightly smaller compared to last year but the speakers presented outstanding presentations. Daniel Johnson spoke about kidnapping and ransom, Elijah Shaw on the celebrity niche market, Massad Ayoob on liability concerns, Pete Dordal who is VP of Garda World gave an outstanding presentation on security activities in the world's hotspots.

Following the conference, ESI held their Alumni Association annual meeting and invited Elijah Shaw, Director of the North American Bodyguard Association (NABA) and Jerry Heying, Executive Director of EPI to attend the meeting to further discuss the possibility of having a jointly sponsored conference. A tentative plan had been for ESI to host a joint conference every other August in Las Vegas, and EPI to host a joint conference every other year in various locations in December. However, it was pointed out that this plan would cause there to be a 16 month period between August and December, and only 8 months between December and August. So this is being looked at more closely and EPI is discussing the consideration of having August as the EPIC conference month. What are your thoughts?

EPI Conducts Two Days of EP Tracks at Trexpo

Trexpo

Last year, EPI gave 4 hours of Executive Protection presentations at Trexpo East and based on the response of the attendees, as well as the Trexpo Staff, EPI was asked to conduct two full days of EP tracks at Trexpo East held in Virginia this past August. The days were divided into 4 sessions each day, so the first day we had the first three blocks as an introduction to executive protection which was presented by John Musser, John Negus, Jerry Glazebrook, and Jerry Heying. The forth session was on the "Protector's Mindset presented by Jerry Heying.

The second day, Tom Bradshaw presented on Public and Private Law Enforcement Liaison and he also worked in a new presentation on the history of Assassinations. Next up was John Negus, Sgt/retired, NYPD who presented on Transitioning from the public to private sector. Austin White gave an excellent presentation on Operational Security and Protective Intelligence (one former US Marshal in attendance said it was the best operational briefing he had ever attended). We saved the best for last, Mr. Bill Horn presented on Medical Emergency Management for PPS. As usual, he had everyone laughing but all the responses at the end of the day was that all the presenters and content was very well received and appreciated.

Here is what the conference manager had to say:

"On behalf of all of us at POLICE TREXPO and POLICE Magazine, we want to express our greatest appreciation for your participation as a speaker/instructor and for coordinating the entire Executive Protection Track at the POLICE-TREXPO East Conference at the Dulles Expo Center on August 10-12, 2011.  We are most grateful to you for sharing your wisdom and experience with the POLICE-TREXPO attendees".
Adriana Michaels, Conference Manager, Bobit Business Media

The keynote speaker was Lt.Col. Grossman who will be the keynote speaker for EPIC, so it was a treat to see him give his presentation. He said he is looking forward to speaking at our conference. The Trexpo social was great fun with NLA Member Joe Paskvan as the MC and in charge of giving out a lot of SWAG (any Finnish Marines in the place??). Several NLA Members came (some Trexpo regulars): Arthur Harvey, Howard Korn, Cindy Ward, Ben Rakhman (and his soon to be an NLA member twin brother), and a CAT from Canada, Charles Sasso. Everyone had fun at our NLA Social too.

EPIC Conference Commitee Report

EPIC_30th

The conference committee lead by committee chair Howard Korn has been working hard to organize a special 30th Annual NLA and EPIC conference. The committee has had some marathon conference calls and has been meeting and discussing a new format in which we will have 10 speakers at this year's conference. We will have the welcoming reception on Thursday evening as usual, and then on Friday the first day of the conference, we will have a general session followed by a panel discussion. And then after lunch there will be three separate breakout sessions each an hour long, and there will be three sessions for a total of nine afternoon sessions. We will record all sessions so attendees will be able to hear sessions that they were not able to attend.

Our current list of speakers include:

Eugene Ferrara, EPI Chief Instructor, Chief of Police, University of Cincinnati

Elijah Shaw, Director of North American Bodyguard Association (NABA)

Judge Bill Peeler, CEO, the Peeler Group

Retired SWAT Captain Rick Neal, CEO, the Neal Group

ESI/EPI Graduate Louis Kiss, High Networth Family Detail Leader

Rick Colliver, Global Security Director for Eaton,

Joe Autera and a host of Instructors from Vehicle Dynamics Institute (VDI),

Harlan "Hucky" Austin from Bodyguardcareers.com,

Charles Randolph, PPS from Microsoft EP/Protective Intelligence Division.

Our keynote speaker on Saturday will be

Lt Col Dave Grossman

Grossman

who will speak on the "Bulletproof Mind-Mental Preparation for Combat"

This program is highly recommended for Executive Protection Professionals. It is also an outstanding presentation for Law Enforcement and all those who carry firearms, so because of that, we are going to allow non-conference attendees to attend Col. Grossman's presentation for a separate fee of $95. We are expecting several hundred to attend in addition to the conference attendees and we will be reaching out to the regions LEO community to bring as many people to hear this vital message.

Because networking is such a big part of the conference, the committee is organizing several extra networking and social event opportunities such as an evening trip to Disney and some other outings. More information will be coming as soon as the committee completes the planning stages and moves into the operational phases. The EPIC website is up and running and you can register for the conference online. This is going to be a great conference, so start making plans now!
