We used to call this "Getting the Green Weenie!" Stepping on your own... and other lines.
Anyway, put a prefix root word (no jokes, please) in front of "something-gate" and you have a word that harkens back to the original scandal. Well, it means there's no one else to blame.
Which is at the core of anything - gate.
Some writers are speculating that this is nothing but a distraction, having asked Wiener to fall on his sword, or take one for the team.
Some think he's just a damned fool. On the hot seat. Not doing a very good job of defending his position. Having a fool for a client, and even compounding the felony.
Good thing he's not hired for anything important..
