ASI TECHNICAL BRIEF #11673 | |
ASI improves brake reliability Problem: A leading ASI customer was experiencing a high warranty rate involving brake failures on their scooter application. While the scooter was designed for indoor use on level ground, typical scooter use can include outside and rough terrain and an environment where debris and moisture are present. Secondarily, scooters are often "cleaned" with the use of a garden hose or high pressure washer. Review: ASI management met with this customer's Service and Warranty team to determine the frequency of this failure and the costs associated with this issue. At that time, complete transaxles were being returned for a simple brake failure due to end user abuse. Solution: ASI worked with our brake supplier to design and develop a new brake that completely enclosed the friction disc. In addition ASI designed and tooled a cover for this brake that protects the micro-switch and brake wires. Handling damage to the wires and switch were a large cause of brake failure.
Results: With the implementation of the new brake and brake cover, along with training the customer's sales support team to better identify warranty claims, returns for brake failures have greatly diminished. A secondary result is that "spare parts" repairs instead of complete transaxles greatly diminished the repair cost at this customer. |
