Sunday Student Services at Heinz Chapel

Pitt Episcopalians, and the University as a whole, have a new option for Sunday morning worship.

The service, a Eucharist from the Book of Common Prayer, will be held at 11 a.m. at Heinz Memorial Chapel, on the lawn of the Cathedral of Learning, between Fifth and Forbes Avenues in Oakland.

Come and join us as we praise God for His goodness, hear and think together about His holy word, and pray for ourselves, our families and friends, as well as the Pitt community.

We hope our Sunday service will become a student-led service.

If you're interested in taking a more active role in planning and conducting worship (including music, bring your instrument), there'll be a short meeting after the service this Sunday (September 9th) to get that process under way.

Sunday September 9: Philip Wainwright preaching at Heinz Chapel Student Service with Holy Communion, 11 a.m.

Wednesday, September 12: Ben DeHart preaching at Wednesday lunchtime service in Heinz Chapel, 12:15 p.m.

Wednesday, September 12: 'Living the Faith' discussion, Panera Bread Meeting Room, Forbes Avenue, 8 p.m.

Wednesday, September 19: Wednesday lunchtime service in Heinz Chapel, Holy Communion, 12:15 p.m.

Megaphone Nomination Deadline Extended

The Diocesan Nominating Committee has been working hard to solicit nominees to fill vacancies on various Diocesan committees and boards and greatly appreciates the individuals who have stepped forward so far.  At this time, however, the committee would like to have more people become involved.  Consequently, the committee has decided to extend the nomination period until October 1.

If you have not already done so, please consider offering your services for one of the following offices to be elected at the Annual Convention at Trinity Cathedral on November 9 and 10:

Standing Committee: One clergy and one lay person to be elected to four-year terms ending 2016.

Board of Trustees: Three lay persons to be elected to three-year terms ending 2015.

Committee on Constitution and Canons: One clergy and one lay person to be elected to three-year terms ending 2015.

Cathedral Chapter: One clergy and one lay to be elected to three-year terms ending 2015.

Disciplinary Board: One clergy and two lay persons to be elected to three-year terms ending 2015.

Commission on Ministry: One member to be elected to a three-year term ending in 2015.

Growth Fund: One member to be elected to a three-year term to expire 2015.

The Diocese can only operate efficiently and effectively if all its leadership positions are filled.   Do your part and by offering your services without further delay.  Nomination forms, with submission instructions and position descriptions are available on the diocesan web site.

Introducing a new Walking Program from CREDO

CREDO's Walk and Be Well offers a way to follow Jesus both in words and action, with a walking program attuned to both body and soul. For four weeks beginning October 1, CREDO will provide daily Walk and Be Well reflections in both text and audio that can motivate, encourage and educate you on the benefits of walking and help you commit to 28 days devoted to better wellness. You'll begin your daily walk with a reflection from one of three CREDO writers and faculty members: Jackie Cameron, Elizabeth Moosbrugger or Bill Watson. Each writer starts and finishes his or her reflection with the same scriptural anchors, but along the way approaches walking from a unique perspective. The entire series weaves together a very broad and holistic look at health and wellness.

Reflections can be downloaded as podcasts, streamed from the CREDO website and printed as PDFs; use them while walking solely or share them with your walking partner or group. And if you would like to receive your daily reflection by email, just sign up below and we will send it to you in the early morning.

Walk and Be Well begins on September 30, with an introduction from Jackie Cameron. October 1 begins the walking days, which continue through October 28. The distance and pace is up to you. Walk and Be Well is your opportunity to join other CREDO participants, whether they're in your area or they live far away, in committing to four weeks of walking as a benefit to your physical and spiritual health and well-being.

Anti-RacismAnti-Racism Workshop Reunion Planned

At the close of the diocesan Anti-Racism Workshop at All Souls Episcopal Church in North Versailles last October, many of the attendees enjoyed the experience so much that they expressed an interest in having a "Workshop Reunion" this fall.

The Commission on Racism has enthusiastically agreed to host a time for reunion, fellowship, sharing, and inspiration. But rather than just inviting one class, the commission would like to invite all past participants of the anti-racism workshops to attend.

Date:  Friday, September 21, 2012
Time:  6-9 p.m. Appetizers at 6 p.m. - Dinner at 6:30 p.m.
Place:  St. Thomas Memorial Church at the corner of 4th and Delaware Ave. in Oakmont, PA

If you can attend, please reply to commission member Darrell Powell via email at dpowell2010@hotmail.com by Monday, September 17th.

Attend the next diocesan Anti-Racism Workshop on October 5 & 6, 2012, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 285 St. Martins Drive, Monroeville, PA 15146

For additional information and registration details, visit www.episcopalpgh.org/arw/

If you are in a position of leadership (lay or clergy), these workshops fulfill the Episcopal Church's requirement for all persons appointed and elected to positions of leadership on committees, commissions, agencies and boards within a diocese or parish.

Note: The upcoming workshop was originally scheduled at a different location but due to an unforseen calendar conflict, has been moved to St. Martin's.
