New Program: Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble

The Hartt School is pleased to announce a new Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble, directed by master drummer Ed Fast! Designed for serious middle and high school percussionists with at least two years of playing experience, the Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble gives its members the hands-on opportunity to develop understanding of the many Afro-Cuban rhythms heard in Latin Jazz. Ensemble members will work with traditional instruments like conga, bongo, timbale, clave and guiro and learn about the evolution of the drum set and its role in the percussion section. In addition, students will explore concepts of Latin Jazz harmony, voicing, bass function, and improvisation through the study of music for mallet instruments.

This ensemble meets on Tuesdays, 5:30 - 6:30 pm, starting September 11, 2012. Space is limited so reserve your spot early! Complete the online form, call us at (860) 768-4451, or email us at harttcomm@hartford.edu to hold your spot.

Announcing Our New Connecticut Children's Choir Directors

We are pleased to announce the appointment of two new conductors for the Connecticut Children's Chorus. Dr. Vanessa Bond will direct the Prelude Choir and Cheryl Tierney will direct the Overture Choir. Our previous Prelude Choir Director, Katherine Zahara, will now serve as conductor for Concert Choir. Hartt Community Divison Director Hilary Respass is thrilled by the new appointments, stating "Stuart Younse and I are extremely pleased that Dr. Bond and Ms. Tierney will bring their exemplary expertise and experience to CCC. We are so fortunate to have conductors of their calibre joining our program. These appointments are a testament to the continued growth and development of CCC as a premiere pre-professional choral program in the region." While we are very excited about these new conductors, we're also very grateful for all the expertise, passion and commitment that Ms. Zahara and Mr. Rhone passed along to Prelude and Overture over the years. Thank you both!
