High School Chamber Choir Concert

Sunday, June 10, 2:00 pm

Asylum Hill Congregational Church

The Hartt Community Division's High School Chamber Choir will hold its eighth annual spring concert, Songs of Love & War, on Sunday June 10, at 2:00 pm in McKeith Hall at Asylum Hill Congregational Church. Directed by Jack A. Pott, this program brings together some of the most talented young vocalists in the Hartford area as well as alumni from past years. The concert is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!

The High School Chamber Choir is a mixed ensemble for students in grades 9-12 and offers a place to experience challenging choral music in a small group setting. Membership in the group is based on teacher recommendation or by audition with the director. Repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the 21st Century in both accompanied and a capella styles.

Interested in singing with the High School Chamber Choir next year? Contact us at (860) 768-4451 or harttcomm@hartford.edu for more information.

Premiere of new piece by Dax Brockington, student in the Young Composers Project

Dax Brockington, a student in the Young Composers Project, was invited by his school band director, John Power, at John F. Kennedy Middle School to write a piece for his school's eighth grade concert band. Dax's new piece, Power Play, is a reference to two significant things: his teacher, Mr. Power, and the literal power play between the instruments in the music. Dax has described this piece as a "terrific learning experience" and says "it wouldn't have been possible without the wonderful guidance of Ken Steen and the YCP program." In addition to composition, Dax studies piano with Maggie Francis. The John F. Kennedy Middle School's eighth grade band will premiere Power Play on June 6 at 8:30 pm. Click here for event details.

Chamber Music America: The Adult Chamber Play-In

In the May/June 2012 issue of Chamber Music Magazine, The Hartt School Community Division was mentioned in Thomas Cabaniss' article The Play-In: A Serious Engagement Tool. Cabaniss describes the rise of community play-ins, which ranges from sing-along activities, to "chamber music breakouts," to orchestral side-by-side events with students and amateur adults playing alongside professionals. The Community Division's Adult Chamber Music Play-In of Fall 2011 was used as an example of how to engage adult musicians who may not be professional performers, but still enjoy playing and have a lot of enthusiasm for chamber music repertoire.

This past May, the Community Division revisited the "Play-In," hosting another informal chamber music play-in for winds and brass musicians in high school and middle school. Everyone had a great time and we look forward to programming more of these events in the future.

Visit our website for more information about chamber music programs for adults and pre-college students. Contact us at (860) 768-4451 or harttcomm@hartford.edu if you would like to join the chamber music program in 2012-13.
