Summer Masterclasses for the Developing Musician: August 13-17

This summer the Hartt Community Division is pleased to present Summer Masterclasses for the Developing Musician. These one-week intensive programs focus on the Middle and High School wind, brass, and percussion student, and are designed to challenge students, encouraging them to reach their potential in a positive and supportive environment. Our highly regarded and experienced faculty guide students through three-hours of small group instruction on solo and ensemble repertoire, technique, and instrument-specific skills. These masterclasses, unique to Connecticut, culminate in a concert for family and friends.

Masterclasses are available for the following instruments:

Clarinet with Adam Berkowitz

Flute with Mary Matthews

Horn with Susan Spaulding

Percussion with Murray Mast

Saxophone with Sheri Brown

Trombone with Jordan Jacobson

Trumpet with Dan D'Addio

This program runs from August 13 to August 17, 2012. Registration for this program is now open. Click here to download the form. Submit your form and payment by June 1 to avoid the $15 registration fee. The final registration deadline is July 6, 2012.

Connie Greenwood at the Children's Museum in West Hartford

First Steps in Music faculty member Connie Greenwood will present The Science of Sound...Vibration, Pitch and Tone at the West Hartford Children's Museum on Sunday, March 18. This class is offered as part of Sonic Sunday, a monthly event in the museum's Family Science Sundays Series. Sonic Sunday exhibits will run from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm and The Science of Sound presentation will be from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.

In The Science of Sound Ms. Greenwood will use instruments made of metals, skins and shakers to demonstrate how these elements affect what we hear. Children will explore sound and how it is produced by vibrating objects.  Through the use of guitar, violin, autoharp and other stringed instruments, children will see how pitch can be altered by the rate of vibrations.  Also, percussion instruments will demonstrate how sound is affected by the quality of the objects.  Children of all ages will enjoy moving their bodies to the music that is created through the science of sound. Hartt college students will also join us to demonstrate the science of their instruments. We hope to see you there!

Hartt Community Division Students at the 2012 Connecticut All-State Festival

Selection for this festival is a great achievement and we would like to congratulate you! Let us know if you are an All-State Festival participant by filling out the online form.

Teri Einfeldt in Strad Magazine

Community Division faculty member Teri Einfeldt was featured in the article, Ask TheTeacher, in the February 2012 issue of The Strad Magazine (Vol. 123, No. 1462). In this article Ms. Einfeldt discussed the observation process in the Hartt Suzuki Program and strategies for teaching notation, good practice habits, ensemble playing, and vibrato. She also emphasized the importance of "finding a love and respect for music, and [realizing] that the rules of learning an instrument apply to all aspects of life."

To read the full article, Ask The Teacher, stop by the Community Division Bulletin Board (Fuller Center) or pick up a copy of the issue at your local bookstore.
