Music in Infancy: a presentation by Dr. Feierabend
John FeierabendProfessor John Feierabend, director of the Music Education Division at The Hartt School, will present a lecture on "Music in Infancy: A Forgotten Art" on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7 pm at the Mandell Jewish Community Center, Zachs Campus, 335 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford.

"Music in Infancy" is a collaboration with the Presidents' College at the University of Hartford, and is based on the idea that all children are born with some potential to succeed musically. However, with a lack of musical experiences in the early years, children lose their intuitive ability to make accurate musical responses. Dr. Feierabend argues that musical development acquired in folk songs and nursery rhymes has been fading in recent decades as society changes from music makers to music consumers.

Dr. Feierabend is the founder of the Community Division's First Steps in Music Program and a national leader in early childhood education.

The event is open to all. There is a $10 charge. For more information, visit the Mandell JCC website.

Ms. Carter will appear with her five-person ensemble to perform pieces from Reverse Thread, her recently-released, internationally acclaimed album of African roots music. A 2006 winner of a MacArthur Foundation award, Ms. Carter is an iconic figure in contemporary American music.

The concert begins at 7:30 pm in Millard Auditorium at The Hartt School. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased through the Box Office at Lincoln Theater. Community Division students can get one free ticket with their University ID card. Seats are selling quickly so we encourage you to contact the box office as soon as possible.
