Fry Street Quartet in Residence 

 

Fry Street QuartetThe Fry Street Quartet  will be in residence at The Hartt School Community Division July 29 through August 7, working with advanced teenaged string players in the David Einfeldt Chamber Music Seminar .

All are welcome to the quartet's
performance on Tuesday, August 2, at 6:00 PM in Lincoln Theater. This concert is free and open to the public. Please contact the Hartt Community Division office at 860.768.4451 or visit the performance and events calendar at www.hartford.edu/hartt for details.

The Fry Street Quartet includes William Fedkenheuer, violin; Rebecca McFaul, violin; Bradley Ottesen, viola; and Anne Francis, cello. Their August 2 program includes Haydn's String Quartet in D Major, Op. 17 no. 6; Shostakovich's String Quartet no. 7, and Dvorak's String Quartet in F Major, Op. 96, the "American."

Dance News 

 

Samantha Dunster, the new Chair of our Dance Department, has arrived and has spent the last two weeks getting to know the staff and faculty and sharing with us the wonderful ideas she has for our school.  Stay tuned for more details about Nutcraker, A Fairy Tale Tea (in August) and much, much more.

 

Our evening Tean/Adult program this summer has been really sizzling and continues through August 11th.  A full schedule of classes are listed on our website.   It's not too late to join us! 

 

The Summer Youth Dance Intensive at the Megan KrementowskiHandel Performing Arts Center begins next week and there are a few spots still open.   Please contact the Dance Department at dancedesk@hartford.edu or 860-768-6000 if your child is interested in participating.  More details regarding the program can be found on our website

 

Lastly, we hope all our students who are away at summer camp are having a great time, or are just enjoying the summer like Hartt's Megan Krementowski is (pictured on the right)!

Register before August 2nd and Save $25
If you have not received your registration packet for the 2011-12 school year, you can download one using the links below, or by calling our office at 860-768-4451.  You can also email harttcomm@hartford.edu to request a packet.
  
Financial Aid Applications are now being accepted.  The deadline for all returning student financial aid applications is August 1st.  Award decisions for returning students will be sent after August 15th.   New applicants are welcome, and their applications will be reviewed after August 15th with award decisions being sent after August 25th. 
 
Avoid the $25 registration fee if you mail, fax or drop off your form before August 2nd!  Dance registrations must be received by August 16th to avoid the $25 registration fee.
  
Summer Private Lesson Registration is on-going.  Please note that all summer private lesson students must register before their first scheduled lesson.  Download the Summer Private Lesson registration form.  All summer private lessons registrations must be received in our office by Friday, August 19th.

National Honors
Check out the article on Farmington.Patch.com featuring HCD student Stephen Zaksewicz recounting his trip to Washington D. C. to perform with the 2011 All-National Orchestra.  Stephen studies cello with Eric Dahlin and is the principal cellist in the Connecticut Youth Symphony conducted by Dan D'Addio

Come out to see Kate McLellan, HCD voice student of Dr. Susan Mardinly and several other HCD students in the Wethersfield Teen Theater Company's production of The Pirates of Penzance! this weekend!

trumpetCalling all Trumpeters!

The Southington Brass Blast is a Guinness World Record attempt for the largest trumpet ensemble and a benefit for organizations that support students and musicians. At least 1,200 trumpeters are needed to break the record. We will be performing the national anthem and a selection that meets the Guinness criteria for this record breaking attempt. Trumpet players who haven't picked up their horn in a while, especially parents of current trumpet students are encouraged to join us.  Print the registration form now. 

Invite your fellow trumpet players to participate via the Southington Brass Blast, a Guinness World Record Attempt event on Facebook.

Piano Honors
CSMTAThree HCD students won the Connecticut State Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition  which was held on June 18th:

1st Place: Ethan Wu, student of Sima Brodsky 2nd Place: Mary Pan, student of Maggie Francis 3rd Place: Anna Pan, student of Maggie Francis

Ethan Wu will be featured as guest soloist with the Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestra .  Congratulations to Ethan, Mary and Anna!

 

Adult Chamber Music Recitals 

 

You are invited to attend two Adult Chamber Music Recitals:

August 9th and August 12th, 7:30 pm
Berkman Recital Hall

These recitals are end-of-summer performances for participants of the Summer Adult Chamber Music Program. This is also the inaugural recital for a new Community Division program. We are happy to provide a chamber music experience for adults, where participants enjoy the challenge of playing an independent part, the richness of the repertoire, and the close personal contact among colleagues. We will be continuing the program in the fall. Interested adult instrumentalists should contact Jordan Jacobson at jojacobso@hartford.edu for information. 


Middle School Instrumental Workshop

Tuition: Half-day $250, Full-day $325 

Non-refundable $15 registration fee, waived if enrolled by June 1.  

Students with at least two years of experience on their instrument will enjoy a comprehensive music program that combines the performing arts with summer fun.   More information.

Hartt Aulmn is The Voice  

Javier ColonHartt School alumnus Javier Colon '00 (music education) has won the inaugural season of NBC's popular singing competition The Voice. Colon won the top prize of $100,000 and a recording contract. Several of his performances from the show quickly jumped to the iTunes Top 10, and he has a web site,

www.javiercolon.com, where fans may even buy Javier Colon t-shirts and baseball caps.
 

Colon, who has skyrocketed to fame since the show began airing in late April, is scheduled to return to the University of Hartford campus on Saturday, October 22, to perform in Lincoln Theater as part of Hawktober Weekend, the University's official alumni weekend. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale in mid- to late-August. Additional information will be announced as it becomes available.  

 

In addition, a national tour by the eight semifinalists on The Voice, including Colon, will stop in Wallingford at the Toyota Presents Oakdale Theatre on August 5.  Read the full article.
