Adult Chamber Music Play-In

Join Hartt Community Division faculty and special guest Gillian Rogell for an adult chamber music play-in at The Hartt School Community Division.
Enjoy an afternoon of chamber music reading and socializing with other adults who share a love of chamber music.
All Levels Welcome
Feeling shy or intimidated? We will form groups to match varying abilities. Experience the joy of intimate chamber music in a comfortable, supportive, collegial environment. The Play-In welcomes all string, wind, brass, and piano players.

About the Reading Sessions
The event includes three reading sessions. Stay the whole afternoon, or come when you can.
Music is available for download on our website for those who wish to prepare in advance. Have something you want to read? Bring it with you! Wind and Brass players: Please bring music for your instruments in various combinations. Flute players: Please bring music for multiple flutes, e.g. trio sonatas, etc.
HCD faculty will fill spots in chamber groups as needed.

HCD Students Accepted to Regional and All-State Festivals
We are proud to publish the list of HCD Students accepted to the CT Music Educators Association (CMEA)'s Regional & All-State Festivals. An impressive total of 254 Hartt Community Division students were accepted to various regional festivals and/or the All-State Festival. See the full list.
An impressive 51% of the All-State Orchestra and 55% of the Northern Regional Orchestra were Hartt Community Division students.
We would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to all of the students who worked diligently to prepare for the auditions and festivals. Another congratulations goes out to the dedicated Hartt Community Division private lesson teachers, ensemble conductors and chamber coaches who guided their students through the audition process.

HCD Students Perform at Rock Cats Game May 3rd ~ Order your tickets today!
 Hartt Community Division and College Viola Players perform the National Anthem at the Rock Cats Baseball Game on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 in New Britain, CT. Purchase your tickets and share in the fun watching baseball together with other families from Hartt. Ticket orders must be received no later than Saturday, April 30th in the Hartt Community Division office. Tickets, through this offer, are available for just $7 each. All performers can attend the game for free. Checks made payable to "University of Hartford" accompanying the order form. Tickets will be available in the "will call" booth at the game.

The University of Hartford invites you to campus on Saturday, April 30. Our ninth year features exciting new attractions in addition to the tried and true favorites of the past. Come one, come all!
The Hartt Community Division will be well represented at this year's festivities with chamber group performances on the main stage, Suzuki Group Class performances, First Steps in Music demonstrations and dance classes. Summer Focus: Children's Ballet Workshops
This year we are offering Children's Ballet Workshops in Hartford & Simsbury: Handel Performing Arts Center, Hartford June 27-July 1 8:30-11:30 am daily
Simsmore Square, Simsbury
July 25-29 8:30-11:30 am daily These workshops are tailored to children ages 5-8 and are designed to tap into your child's natural energy and expressiveness. Your child will enjoy time in dance classes, making arts and crafts, learning dance vocabulary, and creating a mini-performance for parents on the last day of each camp. Recommended for anyone currently enrolled in our Children's Ballet program, and open to all. Beginners are welcome!  Tuition
$175 per week
$15 registration fee, waived if enrolled by June 1, 2011

David Einfeldt String Orchestra Composition Contest Deadline Extended: April 25, 2011
The deadline for submission has been extended until April 25, 2011. Please submit all of the following materials:
· Application Form · Computer-notated scores are required. However, legible hand-written scores will be accepted with special permission from the program director
· 3 copies of the score, double-sided & bound
· 1 set of proof-read parts
· In addition to all of the above, students may also send a MIDI or audio recording. A Finale or Sibelius file is acceptable for this purpose.

"How to Practice" Workshop by Sheri Brown
 We've all heard that practice makes perfect, and musicians know that learning to play well requires diligent work with the instrument. But what exactly does it mean to practice well? How do we make the most out of our practice time? Is it possible for practice to be efficient, effective, and fun? In this "How to Practice" workshop you will learn how to set goals, structure meaningful practice sessions, and gain a wide variety of fresh approaches to improve your skills and enjoyment of your instrument.
Join us for this informative workshop at The Hartt School on April 30th or May 1st. Participation is free and open to all Hartt Community Division students; no pre-registration required.

Hartt Welcomes Back Renowned Jazz Alumi Hartt celebrates its Jazz alumni on Monday, April 25, when several alumni of Hartt's Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz join together for a concert and evening of fond reminiscence, followed by a special dessert reception. The concert begins at 7:00 PM in Millard Auditorium, on the University of Hartford's main campus, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Tickets are $20, and proceeds benefit Hartt's Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz. Hartt Community Division & University of Hartford students each may receive a free ticket for this concert by presenting a valid student ID at the Box Office. No other discounts are available. Invited performers include: Stephen Benson '80, guitar; Mark Berman '82, piano; John Hahn '78, trombone/bass; Saul Rubin '81, guitar; Gary Seligson '83, drums; and "Sweet" Sue Terry '82, saxophone (pictured). The concert includes performances of original works by Hartt alumni and the late, great Jackie McLean, as well as other jazz standards.
Journey of the Soul The Hartt Symphony Orchestra and Choruses, New Haven Chorale, Connecticut Children's Chorus, and guest artists present Journey of the Soul, a concert of awe-inspiring musical masterpieces and readings that vividly portray man's spiritual journey. Thursday, April 28, 7:30 PM, Cathedral of St. Joseph, 140 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. General seating, suggested donation of $20 at the door. Maestros Edward Cumming and Edward Bolkovac conduct Brahms' beloved Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny); Stravinsky's energetic Symphony of Psalms; and "Urlicht" and the Finale of Mahler's monumental Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection".

Dance News
Performance Ensemble Concert, Saturday, April 30th, 2pm
This year's concert will feature students from the Junior and Senior Performance Ensembles from the Intensive Division of the Dance Department alongside students from the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts, The Hartt School's Collegiate Dance Division and members of Full Force Dance Theatre. The performance will be on Saturday, April 30th at 2pm at the Mandel Jewish Community Center (JCC), 335 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Tickets for the event are $10 General Seating ($5.00 JCC Members). Stop by the Dance Department to purchase your tickets or call (860) 768-6000 or email kilpatric@hartford.edu.
Non-Perishable Food Collection at the Performing Arts Center In conjunction with Foodshare's Walk Against Hunger which will be in Hartford on Sunday, May 1st. The Dance Department will be collecting non-perishable food items for this very worthy cause. There will be a container located by the Pointe Shoe sculpture in the lobby area at the Performing Arts Center on Saturday, April 23rd through Saturday, April 30th for you to drop off your items when your child comes to class.
Foodshare's Walk Against Hunger is the largest anti-hunger event in the region. All of the proceeds raised go directly to fighting hunger in Hartford and Tolland Counties, where more than 128,000 people are hungry, including 50,000 children. Registration begins for Summer Private Lessons & Summer Suzuki Group Classes
Summer Private Lesson & Suzuki Group Class Registration
Beginning tomorrow, Friday, April 15th, we will begin accepting Summer Private Lesson and Suzuki Group Class registrations.
Steps for Summer Private Lesson Registration: ~ Check with your private lesson teacher to find out if they are teaching this summer. ~ Discuss your summer schedule with your teacher and figure out the number of lessons that will work with both of your schedules.
~ Register before your first lesson. Download the Registration Form. Please note that all summer students must register prior to their first scheduled lesson or before Friday, August 19th, whichever date is eariler.
Summer Suzuki Group Classes offered for Hartt Suzuki Violin, Viola and Cello Students
We are excited to offer our Suzuki violin, viola and cello students a series of optional Summer Group Classes. This will be a great way for your child to keep building their skills over the summer! Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-6:30pm at Hartt (Room TBA).
The series of 6 classes will be held on:
June 21 & 28 and July 5, 12, 19, 26.
Tuition: $81.00
Reg Fee: $15.00 Please note that you will need to commit to the full 6-week session. The tuition will not be pro-rated for classes missed by students. A minimum of 7 students will be required for each class to run. Download the Registration Form.

Suzuki Practice-A-Thon for Japan
Students of the Hartt Suzuki Department are encouraged to participate in a practice-a-thon to raise money for the children in Japan through Save the Children. Our aspiration is to become a part of the relief effort through dedicating our daily practice and review to the children of Japan.
From Saturday, April 30th - Friday, May 6th students will commit to daily home practice and review. Each student will find sponsors willing to pledge a small amount of money for each minute practiced or a straight donation for your week's worth of practice. The collective result will demonstrate how the performing arts can truly make a difference for those in need.

Scholarship Opportunity for Glastonbury Residents
The First Church of Christ, Congregational in Glastonbury is pleased to offer scholarships of up to $1,000 to student musicians in the First Church family or the Glastonbury community to defray the cost of private lessons. The selection process will focus on an applicant's interest in classical music, especially music appropriate for sacred settings. Through these scholarships, The Board of Music seeks to encourage the appreciation and performance of church music through formal education and foster church musicians, both professionals and lay volunteers.
