The Connecticut Classic
Congratulations to Dance Department dancers Gabrielle Collins, Alice Garsuah, Noami Lemire and Kathryn Manger who represented the Dance Department this past weekend at The Connecticut Classic Ballet Competition at Westover School. All of our dancers did extremely well and should be very proud of their accomplishment. We are very proud of our two finalists, Kathryn Manger and Gabrielle Collins:
Kathryn Manger (right) placed first in the Senior Division of the competition and received a gold medal and a full tuition Scholarship to BalletMet's summer program this summer.

Gabrielle Collins (left) aged 14 received a bronze medal and was placed 3rd in the Junior Division of the competition. Ted Hershey Dance & Music Marathon
The Ted Hershey Dance and Music Marathon's 13th Annual Dance Concert was held at the Charter Oak Cultural Center this past Saturday, March 12th. Various dance groups from the Greater Hartford Area treated the audience to an eclectic collection of dance performance. The HCD Dance Department presented Variations from Le Corsaire danced by students from our E/F level of the Intensive Division, Gabrielle Collins, Kathryn Manger and Katrina Schmidt who thrilled the audience with their poise and grace. Spring Festival 2011
The deadline for permission slips to have been returned for your children in Children's Ballet 1 though the Intensive Divison E/F was last Friday, March 12th. Our staff has been following up on permission slips that we have not received.
If you have not turned your slip in you must fax it to the dance department (860) 768-2496 immediately.

News from the String Deparment | |
The Senior String Honors Recital was held on Saturday, March 12, 2011, 7:00 pm in Berkman Recital Hall.
Students were selected by audition, and our adjudicators were Dr. Jeffrey Cox, Chair of the Department of Music and Dance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; and Andrew Mark, Chair of the Department of Strings at Boston Conservatory
of Music and cellist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

This year's performers were Matthew Hannau, Meredith Keen, Maggie Klucznik, XingYing (Anny) Li, Gunnar Moll, Luke Piscitelli, Tiana Piscitelli, Trent Ransom and Shreya Sachdev.
Shreya Sachdev, a student of Teri Einfeldt, was the winner of the Abraham M. Huang Memorial Award, given to the best performer at the Senior String Honors Auditions who is not graduating this year.

Matthew Hannau, also a student of Teri Einfeldt, was the winner of String Honors Senior Award, given for the best performance by a student who is graduating this year.
The Junior String Honors Recital was held on Sunday, March 13th at 6pm at the Duncaster Retirement Home in Bloomfield. The Junior String Honors Recital features HCD string players in grades 6-8 who have been recommended by their private lesson teacher. This year's performers were: Sophia Gilchenok, Gioia Gedicks, Dan Hardiman, Austin Zhu, Priscilla Back, Kaila Piscitelli, Joel Margolis and Miriam Peschet.
Gioia Gedicks was the recipient of the John Jorgensen Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is presented to a middle school string student who has been nominated to perform in the Junior String Honors Concert. The award is given to a student who exhibits commitment to their instrument and to the school, has steadily shown improvement during the current year, and plays musically and with a beautiful tone. |

The hallways of The Hartt School were filled with piano music as our annual Piano Honors Auditions were held last weekend. Our judges, Galina Gersenzon, Gisele Nacif, Michiko Shoji, and Fabio Witkowski, chose 29 piano students for Honors:

11th Annual Women Composers Concert Come out to see Hartt Community Division Voice Faculty & Guest Artists perform in the 11th Annual Women Composer's Concert on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 5pm in Berkman Recital Hall. This concert is free and open to the public.
Featuring: Nancy Andersen, Susan Mardinly and Sarah Comfort-Reed (sopranos), Mezzo-Soprano Adrienne Milics, Tenor Jack Pott & Bass Jason Stammen.
The concert will include music by women composers Libby Larsen, Hartt Alum Gwyneth Walker, Clara Schumann and Sarah Meneely-Kyder as well as the 2011 VOCAL SCORE CALL WINNERS: Dale Trumbore and Beth Anderson.
The Connecticut Doctors Orchestra
The Connecticut Doctors Orchestra will be presenting a benefit concert Sunday, March 27th. The concert will include appearances by The First Church of Christ Women's Praise Choir, Simsbury High School's men's and women's a capella groups, and Ethel Walker School's a cappella group "The Grapes".
Free-will donations will be accepted for the purpose of completion of the construction of a health clinic and the provision of bed nets in the village of Bawa, Cameroon.

Established in November 2008, The Connecticut Doctors' Orchestra (www.thecdo.com) is comprised of a group of health care and medical science professionals who love music and wish to share music with the community. The members are physicians, nurses, biomedical scientists, and medical and dental students making it one of the nation's few string orchestras whose musicians work in the health field. The CDO's conductor is Eric Dahlin (HCD Cello Faculty) and the music director is Melinda Daetsch (HCD Suzuki Viola & Viola Faculty).
