Bass Craig Hart joins HCD Vocal Faculty
We are pleased to welcome Mr. Craig Hart to our voice faculty. He will share with our students not only his vocal expertise but also his experience as an opera singer with an active and exciting career.
Craig Hart embodies that rare combination of a performer and a teacher with a dedication to mentoring young singers. Even with a busy and successful career as an operatic bass that has spanned the globe from Palm Springs, California, to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, he has always made time to coach other operatic hopefuls.
Mr. Hartt currently has openings for new students on Wednesdays at Hartt and Fridays in our Simsbury location. Contact Jill Burnham, HCD Administrative Secretary at jburnham@hartford.edu or 860-768-5772 to discuss placement.

The CCC Men's Choir was chosen by an MMEA committee to present a workshop and performance demonstrating the choirs' ability to perform varied literature for men's voices. Performer's Certificate Program Enrollment, Fall 2011
Donna Menhart, Coordinator for the Performer's Certificate Program, would like to remind faculty, students and parents that Fall 2011 enrollment begins with students that have successfully auditioned for the HCD Honors Recitals held during the spring 2011 semester.
Students entering 10th and 11th grades in Fall 2011 are automatically invited to enter the program if they have been accepted to perform on these spring honors recitals, and will receive a letter from the coordinator during the month of May. Once formally invited via letter, each student must submit acceptance into the program in writing to the Coordinator by May 28, 2011. After the performance criteria are met, enrollment is based on a first-come-first served basis. If there is room in the class after the initial invitation and acceptance process, students outside the Community Division are invited to audition at The Hartt School, either on Audition Day June 5, 2011, or at a separate audition arranged by the coordinator. Present at the audition will be a department representative, the Program Coordinator, and in some instances, the Director of the Community Division. Audition expectations are the same as the Honors Recital Audition requirements. Please consult the department chair for clarification concerning audition materials. Class enrollment is determined by July 1, 2011.
As the season for Honors Recitals approaches, please consider this information and learn more about this highly regarded college-preparatory program for gifted high school musicians. For more specific information on the Performer's Certificate Program, please contact Donna Menhart via email at menhart@hartford.edu or 768-4120, or you can visit the Hartt Community Division website. |

Early Music Classes with Laura Mazza-Dixon
We are offering 3 Early Music Classes with Laura Mazza-Dixon this spring.
Viola da Gamba Class
The viola da gamba is an instrument with six strings, tuned in fourths, like a lute or a guitar, seven tied-on frets, and is played with a bow held with the hand underneath the stick and the fingers on bow hair, which is under less tension than a modern bow. It was popular from the 1500's through the 1700's and came in several sizes: treble, alto, tenor, bass and the violone, which is the ancestor of the modern double bass.
Gamba is the Italian word for leg, and all sizes of the viol (as it is known in English) were played together in "consorts of viols," with a repertoire which reached its height in the Jacobean period, just following the reign of Queen Elizabeth. In the Baroque period the bass viol remained in use as a solo and a continuo instrument. More information is available at the website for the Viola da Gamba Society of America website at www.vsgsa.org.
A 12-week session open to beginning and intermediate viola da gamba players is being offered from March to May. Focus will be on producing a beautiful sound, refining bow technique and developing sightreading skills. Instruments will be available to rent.
Program Fee: $190
For more information contact Laura Mazza-Dixon at mazdxn@aol.com.
