As we wrap up our final week of campers, we look back with amazement at how blessed we have been by those of you who spent time at Wapo, Wilderness Canoe Base, Luther Dell and Ox Lake this summer.  We pray that God will continue to work in your life and bless you abundantly...so that you can share with others, the love of Jesus.
Hawaii 1 Wapo goes to Hawaii
by Sam Pertz, Wapo summer leadership staff

Aloha!  Greetings from the island of Oahu!
The last two summers I have coordinated and led a team of Wapo staff to facilitate a week of camping ministry for the Lutheran Churches on Oahu.  Hawaii is a beautiful place, although it is struggling with many hardships within their communities.  Poverty, homelessness, and cultural identity are some of the more prevalent issues.  A stronger presence of Christ's love and unity is clearly in need.

We work with 7 ELCA churches on the island and have had 2 great weeks of camp with their youth.  The 2008 trip was a pilot project for Wapo's ministry. We were excited, as well as curious to see how the youth there would welcome camping ministry.  We were blessed to serve over 50 children last summer and it was amazing to see the Holy Spirit flow through the campers.  This summer was equally as exciting, as we had the opportunity to work with many returning and new youth.

This unique relationship in ministry for both Wapo and the Hawaiian Lutheran Churches has left people dreaming, praying, and rejoicing in the ministry done, as well as what future opportunities may bring.  Please pray for this extension of Wapo's camping ministry!

What a summer it has been at Luther Dell!  We've had a great season of campers coming through our doors these last three months.  Wonderful friendships and memories have been made, and faith has grown.  We're currently wrapping up our camping season and heading in the direction of fall retreating.  Our big push now will be building projects around camp, including our screened-in campfire ring and the remodeling of one of our shower houses.  We've also had the opportunity to do minor maintenance projects to beautify this wonderful place.

Dedication and Renewal at Wilderness Canoe Base
Unbelievable progress has been made in the  construction of new buildings at WCB.  The new Trailshack was up and running this summer and successfully outfitted all of our canoe groups in wilderness style.  Summer staff were able to live in the new staff cabins which are designed to foster community living in God's beautiful creation.  One camper cabin is complete and another close behind.  All of our visitors this summer were able to enjoy and appreciate the skilled workmanship behind these awesome buildings.

Ox Lake Horse Camp
by Wendy Twedt Maxon, Horse Program

Giddy Up!  Horse Camp at Ox Lake had 44 campers this summer.  The horse enthusiasts woke early with excitement and a smile on their faces to go greet the horses.  They would help feed, groom and saddle them.  They were paired with their very own horse for the week to build a relationship with and learn how to ride and handle a horse on the ground.  There were fun-filled weeks of horse knowledge, learning to ride bareback and English, fun quizzes, obstacle courses, horse movie nights, riding through the river and learning about faith...all wrangled into an awesome week of horse camp.  Join us in 2010!

by Erik Teig, Ox Co-Director

The First Ever Running Camp at Ox Lake was a blast! The Amery and Centennial Cross Country teams grew together as runners, teammates, friends and as brothers and sisters in Christ.  They challenged themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually and had a disgustingly good time doing it!
chinaBringing Bible Camp to China
by Dave Peet, Ox Co-Director

A team from Wapo and Ox Lake spent three weeks in Hong Kong and Mainland China.  The camp in Hong Kong was a wonderful ministry opportunity.  It also was one step closer to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hong Kong (ELCHK) having their own camping ministry!  The team partnered with the ELCHK and China Service Ventures (CSV) to put on a youth camp in the mainland of China.  It was a youth camp that focused on English, Environment, and Cultural Exchanges.  It was wonderful to see the relationships built between the staff and the campers!  The team encountered endless amounts of opportunities to share the love that has first been shared with us!
