| Staff Training |
Staff Training was an amazing time for the staff to get to know each other and catch glimpses of the life change that will happen this summer. Training included the all-staff gathering at Wapogasset in Amery, Wisconsin, sessions in Wilderness First Aid and Water Safety, and a field trip to Grand Portage for the much needed historical perspective of the voyageurs. Program staff (canoe guides and building crew leaders) wrestled with the questions brought up in our summer program: Called. Where are we called and what are we called to do? Most importantly, how do we engage kids to answer these questions on the trail and here on base?
Staff balanced training and program writing with preparation for kids to encounter the islands. This meant doing many work projects, including back-filling trenches that have been dug to provide electricity and water lines to new buildings. Summer 2009 may be known in the future as the summer of filling trenches! This project is a blessing, as it means the new buildings are, or will soon be functional! We were also blessed as a staff by the family of staff member Jonathan Halvorson-Frissel, who invited us over for dinner to their stunning cabin on Gunflint Lake.
As always, Staff Training culminated in the Staff Trip, which sent almost every staff member into the Boundary Waters with our most passionate and experienced guides, to learn first hand what it means to give kids this experience with the Creator. Staff trip is a special time for all staff members to work together in a new way, learn vital skills, and face challenges as a team brought together by God. Connections made on Staff Trip often turn into strong friendships throughout the summer, and into other seasons in our lives. |
| Trailshack Dedication |
During Staff Training, guides and building crew leaders moved into the new Trailshack. This was an exciting day (and week), where 20 brigades were stocked and inventoried, food was piled high, and organizational plans were made for several storage and work rooms. Canoe trips mentioned below were the first to pack out of the new Trailshack, much to the guides' delight. We marvel at this beautiful, functional, and community-building space. On June 28th, we invite you to the islands to celebrate a Trailshack Dedication, in the form of worship and thanksgiving. Throughout the rebuilding effort, God has provided the hands and hearts to make Trailshack-and all new buildings-a reality; we'd like to recognize those who made it possible, and celebrate the tradition of Trailshack and its importance in our community. Worship and commissioning will be at 10:00 am Sunday morning on Canoe Beach; rides to the Islands will be provided up until 9:45 am. To participate in the celebration, call Wilderness to arrange for meals and/or accommodations. |
| On Base News |
Our Building Crew Leaders plus one guide left the base this week to provide Vacation Bible School, per tradition, to Bethlehem Lutheran in Grand Marais. They will undoubtedly be a strong presence in kids' lives this week, and make strong connections to the community that means so much to Wilderness. In addition to sending canoe trips, we welcomed two work crews to the Islands this week: Christ the King Lutheran-White Bear Lake and Resurrection Lutheran-Woodbury. They have begun work on the new staff housing-staining, sealing, and trimming the interiors. They are also staining the Sauna, which was finished Spring 2008 at the site of the old winter sauna. They are also working on forest restoration; one camper reported at dinner they had planted 1,000 trees on Monday!
This Week in Construction Brian, who started as construction manager in Fall 2008, has worked tirelessly to finish staff housing so that we may have stable homes this summer. Staff housing is comprised of three incredible new buildings, with views of Seagull Lake from porches and windows. These three buildings provide guides and base staff with six separate, intimate, 4-person spaces, ample storage, and porches. They have been named Chi Rho, Icthus, and Alpha Omega. These buildings are quickly getting trimmed and finished. The next building for finishing will be Selah, followed by Listening Point, which need flooring, doors, siding, trim, and bunks. Also in the plans for the summer are the building of several outhouses. |

Lindsay Bragstad Lindsay Bragstad, our Director of Health and Safety and Swamper Coordinator, is from the Como Park area of St. Paul. In the fall she will be a senior at the University of Minnesota as an elementary education major. She hopes to teach this age group in the future. Lindsay became connected with Wapo when she was a camper and TIM teamer throughout middle and high school. Her uncle was also a guide at Wilderness, and her dad and uncle were both participants on a Norwester trip, which were 30 days long! Lindsay has enjoyed coming up to Wilderness for visits and New Year's celebrations, and became a staff member in 2007. This is her third summer on staff. Her past roles have included Island Camp Counselor, Assistant Camp Manager, and Swamper Coordinator. Lindsay enjoys her role as DHS because there have already been many unexpected treatments at camp that provide new challenges. Lindsay also gets to practice her teaching skills during Health and Safety Orientations with campers. Lindsay's favorite part about working at Wilderness is the abundance of unexpected events. She remembers an incident in Summer 08 in which the power went out, and everyone had to drink the milk that was about to expire so it would not go to waste! She also has fond memories of singing "Build me up Buttercup" in the sauna and the "Gunflint Trail" rendition of the song "Country Roads" with staff members. Lindsay expressed that she feels God's presence up here, and enjoys living out her faith in her day to day tasks in community. Because of the quiet, she says, "His answers feel like whispers." Laura Johnson Laura Johnson, the writer of this newsletter, is our Camp Chaplain this summer. Laura returns to Wilderness after being on staff as a guide in 2004 and 2005, and the Director of Health and Safety in 2006. She was also a counselor at Luther Dell in 2003. Laura is from Amery, Wisconsin and just finished her master's degree from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Special Education. She will be a first year teacher for students with learning disabilities at Mondovi High School in Mondovi , Wisconsin this fall. Laura enjoys all the outdoor activities that go along with canoe guiding and living at Wilderness, as well as cross country skiing in the winter. She also loves studying education and embracing new challenges. Laura's favorite Wilderness experiences involve the life change that occurred on canoe trips. Her most memorable trip was when she went down the Frost River in August when it was almost all dried up! There were two long days of many portages and carry-overs, and slow trudging through muddy stream beds. The perseverance and faith of this group of youngsters was unforgettable. Favorite on-base memories include many nights doing dishes with new friends, hours of singing together, and having great talks at night in the old staff cabins. Laura is also excited to be a part of the rebuilding effort and seeing all the blessings and renewal Wilderness received after the fire in 2007. Also, "Working with guides on programming, planning Vespers and Worship, and filling the role of Camp Chaplain through prayer and support has been an amazing way to provide for the community here this summer." |
