Romancing Your Muse

February 2010
Romancing Your Muse
Greetings!

What kind of relationship can thrive or survive on minimal contact and interaction? Who among us is not offended by the proverbial and at once infamous 'booty call'? It's fine for a time but at some point we all want a little romance in our lives - something meaningful and perhaps, even a bit more consistent if not permanent. Your muse is no different and longs for the respect and romance it rightfully deserves! Creative talent can hardly excel without the presence of this wonderful energy. But what do you offer your muse to keep it coming back time and again with the inspiration and ingenuity to infuse that next song, story or screenplay?

I have personally come to appreciate that my muse is both youthful and playful and when I take life too seriously I generally scare it away into hiding. My muse loves playing dress up and can show up in the form of any person, place or object. It goes into a giddy frolic at the sight of the vast blue ocean; enjoys the orgasmic spell of gut level laughter; insists that I host dinner parties for interesting people in its honour; is easily provoked to join me in impulsive bouts of dancing and appears especially aroused when I turn the volume up on the music happily getting lost in the rhythm with me. It relishes my attention but knows when to take a step back allowing my craft to glow in the gift of its spotlight. Knowing what titillates my muse is especially tantalizing for me and the pleasure we both experience in our romance solidifies our relationship with the vow to have and to hold forever.

During this month of love explore the very art of romancing your muse and watch your creative brilliance light up your entire universe.

Happy romance!

The Art of Reinvention

You woke up this morning to that nagging notion that you are antiquated and irrelevant. You don't relate to very much and no one seems the least bit interested in connecting with you. Your sizzle has sagged and your current thoughts are the only things you managed to inherit from your parents. Gone are the days of youth and spirited free thinking. You are out of harmony with your life, your social circles, your professional colleagues and pretty much the flow of the entire universe.

You dread turning on the television knowing that you'll be bombarded by a media blitz of how the young, beautiful and talentless are changing the world, building empires from meaningless content and doing it all at the speed of light. You turn it on anyway for the traffic update on your morning commute and there it is eloquently woven in with all the other sensationalistic stories that are now passed off as news...Madonna has REINVENTED herself...AGAIN!

Holy mother of God! What is she, like ninety nine years old now? She looks incredible, she's got a whole new generation of worshippers celebrating her music, she dates boys a quarter of her age and has built her kingdom parading as a slut, a virgin, a mother, a filmmaker, a children's book author and is second in line as heir to the thrown. Well, the last part was quite the stretch but if Queen Elizabeth isn't diligent about putting Prince William under lock and key it could happen. She is amazingly every woman and it's all in her because she has mastered that fine art of reinvention.

You pour yourself a cup of coffee as your prosaic thoughts sluggishly evolve into surprising fantasies of doing the same - reinventing yourself! You engage this new idea a little while longer and by the time as you've had breakfast, showered, dressed and successfully made your way to the office you have mapped out a sketchy plan as to how to execute this overdue overhaul of yourself. After all, you did not move to the big city to become trapped in this shell that you lug around daily. You, like those talentless world changers, made the move on the same mission but you made your move with actual talent. You owe it to yourself, your real self, to fulfill that mission. This moment of inspiration, my friend, is the first step on the road to reinvention!

ESSENCE

Reunite me with my essence
Focus on my luminescence
Let me not seek out ideal
But pleasure in pragmatic real
My fight it ends in victory
This battle has been won by me
I rest within my destiny
My focus pulled so I can see
My future is eternity
I know no time nor boundary
The love I feel embraces truth
It has brought me back to you
The chaos tries to pull me in
Without success. This time I win
From north to south to east to west
This moment is my very best

-Yaphath
