LAN Associates recently announced its creation of The John A. Lacz, P.E. Scholarship, which will assist students with financial need to attend Don Bosco Preparatory High School. Located in Ramsey, NJ, Don Bosco is a private, Catholic, college preparatory high school that is dedicated to empowering young men. The school delivers rigorous academics and strongly encourages participation in extracurricular activities, clubs and athletics.

This new scholarship honors one of Don Bosco Prep's finest alumni, Mr. John Lacz, Class of 1949. Lacz also founded LAN Associates in 1965 and Don Bosco Prep inducted him into its Hall of Fame in October of 2002. The John A. Lacz, P.E. Scholarship recipient will be selected by Don Bosco Preparatory based on his entrance exam and middle school academic performance. The awarded individual will be well rounded, hard-working and active both inside and outside the classroom, have a good, strong sense of character, partake in community service, and have consistently good academic records.

ARticle2LAN Survey Team Assists with Land Preservation Efforts

Wright Family Farm, Warwick, NY

Wright Family Farm, Warwick, NY

During the winter of 2010-2011, LAN was selected by the Orange County Land Trust to perform a boundary survey of 118 acres of agricultural land along Kings Highway in bucolic Warwick, NY. LAN's survey of the Wright Family Farm played an integral role in the acquisition of development rights by the Town of Warwick and Open Space Conservancy. The purchase of development rights ultimately protects the farm from future development and preserves a tributary to Wickham Lake, which supplies drinking water to surrounding residences.

Throughout the preservation process, LAN worked closely with members of the Orange County Land Trust, Open Space Institute, Town of Warwick, their attorneys and title insurers. LAN's finished product was delivered prior to the transaction closing and included multiple metes and bounds descriptions as well as the Wright Farm Boundary Survey and Conservation Map. The final survey created three separate easements-the Farm Market area, Farmstead Complex area-and Farm area as well as a 1.5 acre exclusion area which will accommodate the construction of one single-family residence. Each easement contains language that specifies allowable activities within its boundaries. Some acceptable land use activities include continued field-crop farming, livestock farming, agritourism and sales of agricultural products. These protections will allow the Wright family to continue farming the land.

The survey fieldwork was completed using a combination of GPS and total station technology. LAN surveyed approximately 11,000 linear feet (or more than two miles) of property line to ascertain the Wright Farm boundary. LAN also set over thirty (30) property and easement markers as part of this project. For more information on this survey or to obtain an estimate for surveying services, whether for a one-hundred-acre farm or a one-tenth-acre private residence, please contact Chris Guddemi or Matt Webb.

article4LAN Honors and Awards

LAN Associates marks its debut in the Architectural Record's annual Top 250 Architecture Firms list at #219. Released in July, the list is based on surveys distributed by McGraw-Hill Construction to thousands of U.S. and foreign architectural companies with U.S. outposts. The rankings were determined by 2010 architectural revenues generated from projects completed in the U.S., and further analyses of the companies provide supplementary data gathered from the McGraw-Hill surveys. The complete Top 250 list and additional information can be viewed here

On June 8, LAN was presented with a Mayoral Proclamation Award from the Town of Secaucus as an

Outstanding Business in the Northeast. George E. Thompson, Jr., accepted the award on LAN's behalf. LAN was one of a handful of companies to receive the honor as part of the Northeast Build Expo 2011 in recognition of the fundamental role the building industry plays in this region's economy.

article5New Monitoring System Helps to Identify Potential for Energy Savings

LAN now has the capability to install data logger monitoring systems to model facility lighting and occupancy patterns. This equipment is primarily used to quantify potential energy savings from occupancy based controls, i.e., passive infrared (PIR) devices commonly referred to as an occupancy sensor. The sensors save energy by detecting movement in the room-if there is no movement for a specified period of time the lights will turn off. The data loggers record the activity of a building's lighting patterns (artificial lighting, i.e., light from luminaires) as well as its occupants and are installed in a typical area type. From this information LAN can prepare an analysis of savings vs. time-delays settings for the occupancy sensors and calculate the expected energy savings. Average energy savings from the use of occupancy sensors are estimated at 30 percent. From available data, there is a faster return on investment with the use of occupancy sensors as opposed to lamp and ballast replacement. For more information, please contact William Hodges.

article3LAN Sponsors Pack 38 Soap Box Derby

LAN supports many community programs through donations and employee volunteering. Recently, LAN helped support Cub Scout Pack 38 of Pompton Lakes by sponsoring a soap box derby car. The LAN car was painted by Ken Ross of LAN and raced by many of the scouts throughout the day.

Soap Box 1

Ken assisted as part of the pit crew and even had an opportunity to race the LAN car at one point.

Soap Box 2

The money raised by the car sponsorships and advertising went to support Pack 38. The pack helps  parents to raise the future men of our communities to care for and help others and society. By supporting scouting, LAN is setting an example for these young men and future leaders.
