We find ourselves working on a lot of fascinating and exciting designs entrusted to us by our diverse clients -everything from jet engine technology to campus master plans, to high end hospitality. We love solving problems in creative ways. We are all about design. We hope you find value and new ideas in this sampling of recent projects and occasionally one of these blurbs will spark your imagination.
We are redesigning a house partially gutted by fire. The fire was quickly extinguished by the local volunteer fire department with new technology - a "fire grenade" that robs heat and oxygen. Although the second floor was totally lost, it saved the first floor of the structure. We never knew about "fire grenades". It is this type of innovation we hope to tell you about in future issues.
Times are changing rapidly and we will share new ideas in energy, sustainability, adaptive reuse, and digital technology that is now an everyday part of our practice. More to come...

Why Construction Administration?
LAN is typically involved in the construction adminstration phase for the projects that we design. This proactive "team" approach facilitates the construction process with efficiency by supporting the design intent and reduces or mimimizes project risks for the client.
LAN's construction administration service solves problems before they arise, thereby minimizing claims and adding value to the project.
LAN's construction administration service typically includes review of shop drawings and submittals, providing supplemental instructions, responses to requests for information, site visits to observe the quality of construction, and conformance to contract documents along with the promulgation and distribution of field memorandums and photo documentation of on-site observations, verification of work completed, development of punchlists to indentify outstanding and non-conforming work items, expedited project close-out process, etc.
We have a full time presence at the oceanfront Asbury Tower (right), possibly the tallest oceanfront building between Jersey City and Atlantic City. Complete renovation of each floor, and total replacement of the exterior walls, windows and HVAC system is continuing on a one floor every two week schedule from the top down - while 3/4's of the building remains occupied! LAN's construction administration procedures have contributed to the success of thousands of projects for our clients. These services are offered at our standard hourly rate schedule or for a mutually agreed upon fixed fee, dependent upon the level of effort requested. It is important to note that each project is unique and the construction administration process is generally consistent; however, the contractor and his performance may change from project to project necessitating varying levels of effort by LAN for this expanded service.

Electron Beam Coater Installation to Receive Prominent 2009 Engineering Award
LAN Associates, Engineering, Planning, Architecture, Surveying, Inc. ("LAN") provided architectural and engineering services to Advanced Coating Technologies (ACT) - in the Town of Wallkill, New York for the installation of a state-of-the-art Electron Beam Coater. ACT is a joint venture between Chromalloy and Pratt & Whitney which provides mass production high temperature specialty coatings for jet aircraft engines and turbine vanes. The thermal barrier coating process vaporizes zirconia ceramic with electron beam guns at forty thousand volts. The resulting vapor cloud then condenses on the jet engine parts in an environmentally friendly manner and increases the turbine operating efficiency.
Modifications to the existing 21,500 square foot facility required the construction of a recessed pit within the production floor to accommodate the installation of the coater. Phase one construction entailed a series of pre-pit construction work - building renovations to relocate existing workspaces, offices, utilities and the construction of a new 2,000 square foot mezzanine. Phase two consisted of modifications to the existing foundation, steel columns and the excavation and construction of the pit. Additional modifications include electrical upgrades representing the installation of a new primary electrical service (13.2kV), life safety improvements and a 2-1/2 ton overhead crane. The installation of the new equipment has doubled the facility's production capacity and created additional jobs within the community.
The construction of the pit, within an existing operational facility proved challenging, but the resulting expansion produced a premier coating facility, housing the largest Electron Beam Coater in the world. The extraordinary efforts of both Holt Construction Corporation and Vista Electrical Contractors, Inc. contributed to the success of this project.
The project is a nominee to receive a prominent 2009 Engineering Award.
