58 Doing Good launched to spotlight service projects in D58 schools
Collecting canned goods for the local food pantry. Donating hats, mittens and other items of warm clothing to families in need. Collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House. Writing letters to Santa to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Throughout the school year, District 58 students and staff participate in a wide variety of service projects. These not only make a big difference for those who receive the items and donations, they also cultivate a spirit of giving, civic responsibility, generosity and compassion in the next generation of leaders.
58 Doing Good was created to showcase for our community the many wonderful service projects completed by District 58's students, staff and schools, and to serve as a connector between organizations in need of help and classes/groups within District 58 who might be looking for a service project to complete.

District 58 band, orchestra students preparing for solo performances
Band and orchestra students throughout District 58 have been hard at work since early December preparing for their upcoming solo performances.
District 58's instrumental music program includes a study and performa nce unit on the preparation and performance of solo and ensemble literature. Every intermediate through eighth grade band and orchestra student is given a solo to prepare for performance, which they then spend two months preparing. Professional adjudicators are brought in to listen to each solo and provide constructive feedback.
"This event, which involves more than 500 District 58 students, is an exciting opportunity for our young musicians to demonstrate and improve their skills," said band teacher Christine Kaminski.
Band and Orchestra Solo Day at Herrick Middle School, for students who attend Herrick and the northside elementaries, is set for 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. Band and Orchestra Solo Night at O'Neill Middle School, for students who attend O'Neill and the southside elementaries, is set for 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, February 16.

As a resource for parents, following the workshop the district posted links on the Grove Children's Preschool page, www.dg58.org/preschool, to a video of the "Getting Ready for Kindergarten" presentation by Highland Principal Dr. Judy Kmak. This presentation focused on strategies to prepare a preschool child for kindergarten, including monthly literacy activities that can be done at home. The district also posted the PowerPoint of Dr. Kmak's presentation, as well as the brochure that was distributed regarding upcoming kindergarten roundups at each District 58 elementary school. |
