D58 launches superintendent search, seeks feedback for leadership profile

The District 58 Board of Education has launched its search for a new superintendent to replace Paul Zaander, who will retire at the end of the 2011-12 school year.

The Board voted in October to retain the services of School Exec Connect to assist with the search process. This firm specializes in assisting boards seeking to hire superintendents. A very important early step in the search process is to identify the characteristics the Board will be looking for in the new superintendent.

Parents, staff and community members are encouraged to participate in a leadership survey, which will be available through Wednesday, November 30. The feedback gained from the survey will assist the consultant and the board in creating a leadership profile for the search.

The board's goal is to conduct interviews in January and February and take action on the new superintendent's contract in March. He or she will assume duties on July 1, 2012.

Highland named 2011 National Blue Ribbon School

Highland School was one of 305 schools nationwide -- including just 19 in Illinois -- to be named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.

Principal Dr. Judy Kmak and resource teacher Deborah Schmitt will travel to Washington D.C. this month for a seminar and ceremony sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, and Highland will host a special assembly in December to celebrate being selected as a Blue Ribbon School.

"We are honored to receive this designation. It truly is a testament to the continued commitment to excellence demonstrated daily by our  staff and students, as well as the strong support from our parents and the Downers Grove community," Dr. Kmak said.

Highland is the second District 58 school to be named a National Blue Ribbon School in the past five years; Pierce Downer School achieved this distinction in 2007.

Puffer scores $10,000 grant

Puffer grant

Henry Puffer School was recently chosen as one of 34 grand prize winners in the nationwide NFL PLAY 60's Back to Football Friday contest, netting the school a $10,000 grant for health and fitness efforts.

To enter, schools were asked to show their NFL team spirit at a Back to Football Friday celebration, submit photos from the event, and share why health and wellness is important at their school. Each of the schools selected as an NFL PLAY 60 Super School--one for each NFL team--receive a $10,000 health and wellness grant, and an NFL team celebration that will include an ultimate gym class.

The Puffer-Hefty PTA, which spearheaded the application, hosted Back to Football Friday in conjunction with the school's 24th annual Jean Pogue Lung Run, held in honor of a retired P.E. teacher.

District 58 tech workshop focused on transformative learning experiences

Tech Day

Forty-three presenters -- including three Apple Distinguished Educators, the Illinois art teacher of the year and the director of Illinois Computing Educators (ICE) -- shared their expertise with District 58 faculty and administration on November 3 during an all-day professional development workshop, "Transformative Learning Experiences," at Herrick Middle School.

"Our theme for this District-wide workshop was based on the underlying belief that technology can and does fundamentally change learning," said Scott Meech, District 58's Director of Technology.

The day was divided into three traditional sessions, one "un-conference" session, and an opening and closing keynote presentation.

District 58 students continue strong performance on ISATs

Nearly 93 percent of District 58 students met or exceeded state standards in reading and math as measured by the Illinois Standards Achievement Test administered this past spring, according to results recently released by the state.

The ISAT measures progress toward the achievement of the state standards. All students are tested in reading and math, and fourth and seventh graders also are assessed in science.

"We carefully align our core curriculum with state standards, consistently use research-based strategies, and provide interventions for students who need additional assistance or an extra challenge to be successful," said Cathie Pezanoski, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. "We are extremely fortunate here in District 58 to have families who are very involved in their children's education and a community that is truly supportive of the mission of our schools."

District 58 students chosen to participate in IMEA festival

More than two dozen middle school students from District 58 were selected to participate in the Illinois Music Educators Association's District 1 Music Festival on Nov. 5 at Riverside-Brookfield High School.

The festival involved students selected by audition from schools throughout the southwest metropolitan Chicago area. The festival band, orchestra and chorus presented a public Festival Finale Concert at Riverside-Brookfield High School. The jazz band ensemble will perform Saturday, Nov. 12, at Rich South High School.
The mission of District 58, in partnership with parents and community, is to challenge and engage each child by providing quality educational programs and support services in a safe, nurturing, and child-centered environment in order to prepare all students to be lifelong learners and contributing members of a global society.
