 District 58, PTA Council to host parent education night Downers Grove Grade School District 58 has partnered with the Downers Grove Area Council of PTAs to offer a Social Emotional Learning parent education night on Thursday, Jan. 27. All area parents are invited to attend. During the event, which will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at O'Neill Middle School, 635 59th St., Downers Grove, parents will learn: the five basic SEL skills every child should acquire; what can be done at home to help foster these skills; what schools are doing to promote and develop these skills; and when it may be necessary to seek additional assistance. The event, presented by the Downers Grove Area Council of PTAs, is free; child care is available for a $1 donation to the PTA. A second parent education night is planned for Tuesday, Feb. 15, with grade level Q&A and round table discussions for grades K-12. For more information, please click here.

Four school board candidates file
Four candidates have filed for three open seats on the Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Board of Education. The filing period ended Dec. 20 for the upcoming April 5 election.
The seats up for election are held by current board president Elizabeth Davis and board members John Miller and Scott O'Connell. Candidates who filed by the deadline were Davis, Miller, Rose LaRue-Slater and Doug Purcell. O'Connell did not file for re-election.

 D58 Education Foundation awards $35,000 in grants The District 58 Education Foundation gave away more than $35,000 in grants this year to benefit District 58 schools, an increase of more than $10,000 over the amount the Foundation donated last year. "It was truly a pleasure to be able to increase the funding amount this year and see the money put to such good use," said Education Foundation President Greg Bedalov. Staff were encouraged to apply for grants to enhance curriculum or technology innovations and staff development. The committee received a total of 37 requests from 11 schools. Public invited to community workshop
Downers Grove Grade School District 58 will hold a day-long community engagement workshop Saturday, March 19, to assist in crafting a strategic plan for the district.
The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Herrick Middle School, 4435 Middaugh Ave., Downers Grove. All interested citizens are invited to attend and be a part of the district's long-range planning.

 Grove Children's Preschool applications now available
Applications for tuition-based enrollment in District 58's Grove Children's Preschool program, with its established, research-based educational curriculum, are now available at all District 58 schools. Enrollment is open to all District 58 children who will be 3 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2011. Early applications will be accepted for returning tuition-based students from January 31 through February 4. Applications of siblings of current District 58 students will be accepted from February 7 through 11. Open enrollment will begin February 14. Instructional, behavioral strategies will be focus of upcoming parent group meeting
Parents attending the next meeting of the District 58 Special Services Parent Group will learn instructional and behavioral strategies to use at home.
District 58 special education staff members Patti Cepeda and Kathy Dobill will present during the meeting, which will take place from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27 at Indian Trail School, 6235 Stonewall Ave., Downers Grove. District 58's Special Services Parent Group offers an opportunity to meet in an informal setting and hear from speakers, share special education information and learn about new resources. The group, facilitated by the Office of Special Services, typically meets several times per year.

Nominate D58 staff members for awards
Education Foundation Distinguished Service Award
Is there a staff member in District 58 who goes above and beyond in making students' educational experience the best it can be? Please consider nominating that individual for the District 58 Education Foundation's 2010-11 Distinguished Service Award!
Anyone who is on staff at District 58 is eligible. This year a winner will be selected in TWO categories: 1) classroom teacher, and 2) other employee, which includes principals, secretaries, custodians, instructional assistants, social workers/counselors, and employees at D58's central office and Longfellow Center.
Applications will be available in mid-February at the central office, at the schools and on the Applications page on the Foundation's Web site, www.dg58ef.com. Nominations are due to Jennie Waldorf in the ASC by March 9. All nominees will be honored at a ceremony in April.
Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club Outstanding Teacher Award
The Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club is sponsoring the 20th annual Outstanding Teacher Award to recognize teachers in Downers Grove area schools. A student must write an essay (60 words for K-3, 100 words for grades 4-8) describing the teacher and what makes him or her special. The essay does not have to be about the child's current teacher.
Students with winning entries will honor the teacher they nominated with a plaque courtesy of the DGJWC in March. Entries must be postmarked by Friday, Feb. 25.
