D58 board approves proposed tentative 2010-11 budget
Approximately $2 million in cost containment measures allowed the District 58 Board of Education to approve a balanced proposed $56 million normal operating budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year.
On July 12, the board voted to approve the tentative budget and put it on display. The budget was reviewed and discussed at several public meetings during the last few months; it will be revisited during a special workshop Monday, Aug. 23, and a public hearing will be held regarding the budget before its approval on Monday, Sept. 13.

The learning doesn't stop during the summer in District 58.
At Hillcrest School, nearly 250 students took advantage of the various regular education summer school offerings in June, including math, reading and Leap Into Kindergarten. Students had a full schedule, including time to use the LRC and/or computer lab.
Nearly 50 students took part in the summer art program, where they completed projects in a variety of media. The Extended School Year program for early childhood students, held in June and July, continues to be a success, with an enrollment of 69. In addition, 124 students participated in summer band and 62 in summer orchestra, both of which met at O'Neill Middle School.

Board discusses possibility of further Life Safety work
Thanks to a competitive bidding environment, many of the Life Safety projects planned or currently underway in District 58 using proceeds from $10 million in bonds issued earlier this year have come in under budget, resulting in a projected $3 million in savings.
This has enabled the district to consider having additional projects surveyed and certified as Life Safety in order to be funded with the remaining bond proceeds. Essentially, this means District 58 might be able to fund approximately $13 million in Life Safety projects with just $10 million in bonds. Completing additional projects also would allow the district to be more proactive with the use of its Operations and Maintenance Fund going forward.
