We have a new crop of area artists

Not far away in West Virginia, Susan Bisgyer throws meticulous porcelain pots. "Having grown up studying ballet and music in addition to pottery, I throw each piece individually on a potter's wheel, enjoying the formation of each and every piece of my porcelain pottery, bringing each and every piece to the most perfect form I am able, just as the dancer performs her pirouette or the violinist his concerto". Porcelain is a fine white clay fired at very high temperatures, allowing for thinner, lighter pots with excellent durability. Susan finds her artistic inspiration in the colors and textures of the mountains and rivers of Appalachia. Ridgetop casserole

Jane Wonnell says, "For me, life is a puzzle and so are mosaics. I like to make the viewer ponder the challenge of assembling pieces of junk into beautiful new treasures." Her clocks are curious assemblages of found & vintage objects combined with mosaics, using cigar boxes as the bodies. A resident of Reston, Jane has fun hunting for components and castoffs to use in her amusing work.

Artist Anne Lewis (with able assistant Seamus) has found enviable life/work balance. While her husband is at work and her three kids are in school, she and Seamus explore and photograph beautiful DC sights. Those photos are then translated into vibrant oil paintings. Twelve of her images are represented in this 2013 art calendar that you'll treasure long after the year is over.
