It feels like a breath of spring air, just a tad ahead of schedule. Phyllis Handal, from Welcome, Maryland, works in earthenware, using a combination of wheel and hand building techniques to create her line of dinnerware and serving pieces. Hand painting imparts a spontaneous vibrancy to her work: dragonflies cavort across a distressed creamy background sprinkled with opaque dots of white glaze and praying mantises pose on dishes painted with new-grass green rims. Like what you see? Phyllis's luscious peach pattern arrives in April.
