You reach a certain age, and suddenly your arms aren't long enough. Presbyopia, a natural - albeit annoying - part of the aging process is the culprit, reducing the elasticity of our eye lens. But do you know how to choose reading glasses? Magnifiers come in strengths starting at +1.00, where most newbies begin. We make a point of stocking lots of +1.oo's; you'll soon discover that they are hard to find elsewhere. Most of our suppliers do quarter-diopter increments: +1.25, +1.50, +1.75 and so on up to around +3.50, though some styles may only come in half diopters. Choose the lowest strength necessary t0 read comfortably with your reading material held about 14" away from your face; going stronger only exacerbates the rate of deterioration & may cause headaches. Plastic frames are available in a wide range of colors and finishes, including fun prints, hand painted designs, translucent effects & layered tones. Some even are set with sparkly rhinestones! Metal frames provide strength without bulk. Their thinner frames use nose pads for support, which some people object to: if you slide your glasses up on your head, the pads can become entangled in your hair. On the plus side, metal frames are compact, light & easy to carry in a pocket or purse. Half frames, in plastic or metal, are designed to be worn slightly lower on the nose, with narrower lenses that are easier to peep over for distance. Some are frameless, to eliminate having a line in your vision. Sunglass readers are simply a tinted version of magnifiers. The entire lens is magnified & frames tend to have small to medium sized lenses. Sunglass bifocals combine non-corrected colored lenses with small areas that are magnified. Frames generally are larger, with better overall eye coverage and wider temples to further block sun infiltration. While you have to put up with the tell-tale bifocal line, you can enjoy sun protection while reading and still be able to view distance. Think about how handy that is while reading on the beach and keeping your eye on the kids playing in the surf.
