Program Success Story: Tiffany

Tiffany, who was born prematurely at 34 weeks, came to Goodwill Easter Seals' Early Intervention Program for services at 3 months of age with a diagnosis of Apert's Syndrome. Since birth, Tiffany has gone through many surgeries, including a cranial surgery for her skull and forehead to be rebuilt. She will have surgeries on her hands and feet to separtiffanyate her fingers and toes and she also has some vision problems.  The doctor reports that she only has the use of one eye and that she is far sighted. She has had a cyst on her ovaries and has a cleft palate, which may affect her feeding and communication skills.

When the early intervention evaluator assessed Tiffany's skills at 4 months, she was delayed in all areas of development. She was not rolling, reaching for toys, or responding to voices. After a year of intense early intervention services and the extreme dedication of her family, Tiffany has surprised everyone with her progress. She was recently retested at 15 months and her scores have increased up to ten months.

Tiffany is now sitting, reaching and holding onto toys, and feeding herself cereal, and will continue to surprise us all with her resiliency and determination. Because of her family and her own will-power, Tiffany will continue to grow and amaze everyone around her.
Program Highlight: Camp ASCCA

camper1Goodwill Easter Seals and Mobile Rotary sent children and adults with disabilities to Camp ASCCA in Jackson's Gap, Alabama. This year's camp was celebrated July 26 - 31, 2009.

Each day campers participated in a variety of activities that included the zip line, a nature walk, farm animals, tubing and swimming.  A favorite is the famous talent show along with this year's dance and theme, Monster Mash, to sum up the week. Campers learn new songs and make great friends. It's like the motto says "what happens at camp stays with you forever". Volunteers come back home with a new outlook on life and campers look forward to this event every year. Join us for next year's sendoff and help us give a week of fun to someone with a disability!

Program Highlight: Adult Basic Education

Our
educational program at Boat People SOS in Bayou La Batre is several years old. It started after Hurricane Katrina added extra burdens to a community that was already in need. In the last year, the program has grown substantially.  The volunteer tutors who help in the classroom are invaluable to the program. Without these volunteers the program would not be nearly as effective.
Kaori Noma and Dan Armstrong, who began the Boat People SOS adventure almost 3 years ago, have become an integral part of this classroom of many levels and needs.  They are always positive, energetic, and enthusiastic, and have developed into fantastic role models for the students.

Goodwill Easter Seals also has a rapidly growing adult education program which offers basic skill and GED instruction in the Mobile and Bayou La Batre area. We are fortunate to have volunteers who choose to offer their time and talents in the classrooms as aides to the instructors. It is amazing the magic that happens with the compassion and commitment of volunteers!

The Adult Basic Education class at Springhill Community Connection is honored to have our new class room volunteer, Marsha Lucky.  Marsha joins the ranks of some very dedicated and reliable volunteers from The Junior League of Mobile. She is a busy working mother of four who decided to give back to her community by doing some worthwhile volunteering.  We're so glad she chose Goodwill Easter Seals. - Erica Jones

April Pfeiffer, a student in the work study program at Virginia College of Mobile, is volunteering in the classroom, assisting both GED and ABE teachers, at our Springhill, Azalea, and Schillinger locations. April has been instrumental in assisting the teachers by improving classroom materials and tutoring students.

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers for lending your talents and time to our mission of helping others!
