at Young Harris College for the upcoming month.

Five years ago, I returned to Young Harris College to attend [what was then known as] Homecoming for the first time ever. I had visited the campus a few times, but never for this event. One YHC Homecoming and the rest is history. I fell in love all over again with our alma mater! I jokingly tell people I did not return until Cathy Cox was named president of YHC.

During the last five years, I have returned for every Alumni Weekend, attended drama and musical performances, attended sporting events, became a class coordinator for the Class of 1961 and was just recently appointed to serve on the YHC Alumni Board.

I have to admit that when I visit the campus these days, the hills seem a little steeper and the distance between the chapel and the dining hall seems a little longer-but there is still that "Young Harris spirit" alive and well among our current student population.

We recently held our fall Alumni Board meeting, and what an exciting experience it was to hear about all the great things that are occurring on campus. President Cox reported that we have the largest student enrollment ever and the largest freshman class in the history of the College. Students are coming from several foreign countries, and many states are now represented. My fellow alumni, our secret is out!

YHC and Fieldstone Cinemas Six Host Red Carpet Party and Screening of Warner Bros. Film "Trouble with the Curve"
On Sept. 20, approximately 450 Young Harris College students, faculty and staff enjoyed a special private screening of the Warner Bros. film "Trouble with the Curve" at Fieldstone Cinemas Six in Young Harris.

Members of the campus community "dressed to the nines" while enjoying the red carpet experience, as the YHC Photography Club took photos of the memorable event.

Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood, Oscar nominee Amy Adams, and Justin Timberlake star in "Trouble with the Curve," which marks the feature film directorial debut of Eastwood's longtime producing partner Robert Lorenz. Several scenes were filmed on the YHC campus and around north Georgia. Members of the YHC baseball team are featured in a scene filmed at Zell B. Miller Field, and many of the College's students served as extras for the movie.

Alumni Spotlight: Marc McAfee

When Young Harris College alumnus Marc McAfee, '07, says that "very strong family ties" are what led him to attend YHC, he really means it. His great-grandfather T. Jack Lance served as YHC's president from 1930 to 1942, and nearly a dozen of his relatives have graduated from the College dating back to 1915. While growing up in Kennesaw, he often heard stories about the "Enchanted Valley" that had worked its magic on so many of his family members. "My grandparents met there, and, while her father was president, my grandmother actually lived in what was later known as the Hesed House," said McAfee. Read more>>

The Office of Alumni Services recently posed five questions to Dr. Jim Hale, who taught history and psychology and served as dean of students at Young Harris College, and his wife Barbara, who taught education courses at the College for many years. The Hales have made an impact on the lives of many alumni during the decades they spent as educators, advisors and mentors at YHC. Find out what brought the couple to Young Harris in 1972, some of their fondest memories at YHC, and what it has been like to watch Young Harris College become a four-year institution. Read more>>
