 Student Committee Adds New Events to Homecoming Week Festivities at YHC A committee comprised of five Young Harris College students is planning a memorable week of festivities for Homecoming 2012 that will incorporate many of last year's events along with some exciting new activities. The annual event will be presented in collaboration with the offices of Student Development and Alumni Services and the Department of Athletics. "Each Homecoming should be bigger and better than the year before. Having more events allows students to get even more hyped about the basketball games on Saturday," said Resident Director Hilary Martin, who serves as program coordinator for Homecoming and game day activities. Office of Religious Life Hosts Annual Spiritual Life Retreat
The Office of Religious Life and the Chapel Ministry Team sponsored the annual Spiritual Life Retreat (SLR) at Camp Glisson in Dahlonega, Sept. 7-9. The retreat was attended by 80 Young Harris College students, faculty and staff. The theme for the weekend event, "D.I.S.C.I.P.L.E. (Detach, Introspection, Silence, Cling, Imagine, Place, Listen, Engage)," was discussed in large and small group sessions. The theme was selected as an extension of the Office of Religious Life's theme of "Discipleship" for this academic year. Read more>>

New Purple and White Club Co-Chairs Gear up for 2012-2013 Campaign
Dean of the Division of Fine Arts, Art Department Chair and Associate Professor of Art Ted Whisenhunt and Admissions Specialist Kelli Fell will serve as the 2012-2013 faculty and staff co-chairs of the Purple and White Club, which recognizes the annual giving efforts of Young Harris College faculty and staff. The co-chairs will raise awareness about the 2012-2013 campaign among all departments, divisions and offices on campus. Read more>>

Center for Appalachian Studies Kicks off New Course and Service Projects
On Sept. 13, members of Young Harris College's chapter of Roots & Shoots, students enrolled in the College's new "Introduction to Appalachian Studies" course, Director of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Community Engagement and Professor of Communication Studies Ron Roach, Ph.D., and Dean of the Division of Mathematics and Science and Associate Professor of Biology Linda Jones, Ph.D., engaged in a service project to maintain and upgrade the trail at the Trackrock Archaeological Area in Union County. Anime Club Provides Unique Opportunities for Students Ten members of Young Harris College's Anime Club recently attended Anime Weekend Atlanta (AWA), Sept. 28-30. Young Harris College Assistant Professor of Art Jeremy Waltman's exhibit "Solo" is currently on display at the Campus Gate Art Gallery. Young Harris College Celebrated Make-A-Difference Day
Young Harris College recently hosted a special day of service to celebrate Make-A-Difference Day, a national annual event traditionally held in October. The event was sponsored by S.E.R.V.E. (Service, Empowerment, Responsibility, Voice and Engagement), a committee comprised of student and staff representatives from the College's Bonner Leaders Program, Office of Religious Life and Office of Campus Activities. Board of Associates Kicks Off Local Scholarship Campaign
During the 2012-2013 academic year, more than $3.2 million will be awarded to more than 250 local students attending Young Harris College from Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens, Rabun, Towns and Union counties in Georgia and Cherokee and Clay counties in North Carolina. Gifts made by organizations and individuals to the College's Local Scholarship Campaign make much of this scholarship assistance possible. Read more>>

Faculty and Staff Represent YHC at the Lake Chatuge Charity Golf Classic
(From left to right) Director of Athletics Randy Dunn, Assistant Director of the Recreation and Fitness Center Michael Kimsey, '96, Adjunct Instructor of Political Science Mark Dehler, J.D., and Director of Development Mark Dotson, '88, represented YHC at the Lake Chatuge Charity Golf Classic held at Brasstown Valley Resort on Sept. 14. The event was sponsored by the Towns County Chamber of Commerce. A portion of the funds raised benefited the Towns County Fire Department.

YHC and Fieldstone Cinemas Six Host Red Carpet Party and Screening of Warner Bros. Film "Trouble with the Curve"
On Sept. 20, approximately 450 Young Harris College students, faculty and staff enjoyed a special private screening of the Warner Bros. film "Trouble with the Curve" at Fieldstone Cinemas Six in Young Harris. Members of the campus community "dressed to the nines" while enjoying the red carpet experience, as the YHC Photography Club took photos of the memorable event. Fieldstone Resort President Ken Merritt and YHC President Cathy Cox addressed the crowd before the screening. The event also included a raffle with "Trouble with the Curve" giveaways prior to the film screening. Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood, Oscar nominee Amy Adams, and Justin Timberlake star in "Trouble with the Curve," which marks the feature film directorial debut of Eastwood's longtime producing partner Robert Lorenz. Several scenes were filmed on the YHC campus and around north Georgia. Members of the YHC baseball team are featured in a scene filmed at Zell B. Miller Field, and many of the College's students served as extras for the movie.
