Dear fellow alumni,

As I think about this time of new beginnings for people in the academic world such as students, teachers and administrators, I relish the feeling of excitement at all things new. I grew up in Watkinsville, and Young Harris College was introduced to me by family members when I was a child. My first visit to the campus around 1993 came full circle when I began my freshman year 10 years later in the fall of 2003. There I was at a new beginning, and Young Harris offered unlimited help for me to find my way in education and in life.

Alumni Spotlight: Jared Downs

During his senior year of high school, Jared Downs, '96, decided he was going to leave his hometown of Macon to attend a large out-of-state university. His father, on the other hand, decided Jared needed to stay near home for his first two years of college. His mother knew neither situation would work, so she secretly met with Jared's high school guidance counselor and hatched a plan. "They decided I needed to attend a small college away from home. The small class size, academic reputation and religious influence all drew me to Young Harris College," Downs explained. "When we visited YHC, my dad and I knew it was where I needed to be. When I told my mom I wanted to attend Young Harris, she looked at me and said, 'I know, that was my plan all along.'" Read more>>

5 Questions for... Dr. John and Linda Kniess
Young Harris College Retention Officer John Kniess, Ph.D., and Director of Health and Wellness Services Linda Kniess, R.N., knew that Young Harris was home from the moment they glimpsed the "Enchanted Valley" back in 1976. Since that time, Dr. Kniess has worn many hats, serving as instructor of recreation and physical education, intramurals director, director of athletics, women's tennis and softball coach and head of the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Linda joined the YHC staff in 1992, and together the pair has watched countless students flourish at YHC and beyond. Find out what brought them to Young Harris, some of their fondest memories at YHC and what it has been like to watch the College grow over the years. Read more>>
