Ali Neese

Hello fellow alumni,

Wherever you may be, I hope you're enjoying this beautiful summer weather as much as I am. While you may have been an alumnus or alumna of Young Harris College for a few years, or maybe even a few decades, this is a new title for me. I recently graduated in May and am now learning to navigate the real world outside of the cocoon we know as the "Enchanted Valley."

I grew up going camping with my family in Blairsville and have always loved the north Georgia area, but for some reason I never really considered attending YHC. It wasn't until I received an incredible scholarship through the generosity of Dr. Harry and Harriet Hargrove Hill that I allowed myself to think maybe YHC was the place for me. When I first arrived on campus as a timid 18 year old, I had minimal life experience and no friends on the campus. Like many freshmen, I was nervous about how I would fit in at college. I quickly learned that YHC is a family unlike any other. As the months passed, I not only met my soon-to-be husband, Kyle Hatley, '11, but I also developed friendships that I know I will keep with me throughout my lifetime.

Alumni Spotlight: Mark Hellman

As a child, Young Harris College alumnus Mark Hellman, '87, treasured the weekends he spent away from his home in the East Cobb area of Atlanta backpacking the north Georgia mountains with his Boy Scout troop. It was during one of those excursions that Hellman first experienced what he calls "the Young Harris magic." "All it took was one visit to the campus, and I was hooked. I simply could not believe that I could go to college in such a beautiful place," recalled Hellman. "When Bud Dyer visited me during my senior year in high school, he didn't have to try hard to recruit me to come to YHC - I was already sold." Read more>>

5 Questions for... Randy Dunn
Randy Dunn came to Young Harris College in 2010 to serve as director of athletics after spending 14 years at nearby North Georgia College & State University (NGCSU). He served as head men's basketball coach and director of athletics at NGCSU, where he oversaw the athletic department's transition to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and the Peach Belt Conference, as well as the addition of five new sports. Dunn played basketball for North Georgia, where he received a bachelor's degree in health and physical education before earning a master's degree in physical education from Georgia Southwestern State University. He became an assistant coach at the State University of West Georgia in 1981 before returning to his first alma mater in 1982. During the past two years, Dunn has helped YHC achieve candidacy in the NCAA at the Division II level as well as membership in the Peach Belt Conference. Find out what brought Dunn to YHC, what it's like to lead a rapidly developing athletics program and what fans can expect from the Mountain Lions this upcoming season. Read more>>
YHC Hosts Alumni Day at Turner Field
On Saturday, June 16, nearly 200 Young Harris College alumni, their families and friends enjoyed YHC Alumni Day at Turner Field. Alumni had the opportunity to choose from two unique pre-game packages, including a tailgate party in the Green Lot and meet-and-greet in the 755 Club. Alumni who attended the tailgate party enjoyed ballpark snacks like crackerjack and roasted peanuts, as well as giveaways of YHC gear, while socializing prior to the game. The 755 Club event included a buffet-style dinner and special appearance by baseball legend Hank Aaron, who addressed the crowd, posed for pictures and visited with alumni and guests. Read more>>
